Chapter 15 - Maya’s Ninth BirthdayThe estate looked almost peaceful.

Lights hung above the garden.

Tables surrounded the baseball field.

Children played near the terrace.

Music floated across the lawn.

Maya wore a blue dress with sneakers because she refused to wear uncomfortable shoes at her own birthday party.

Elena approved.

Luca pretended not to have an opinion.

Security was everywhere.

Most guests never noticed.

Vittorio arrived at six.

He carried a silver box.

Inside was an antique bracelet belonging to Luca’s grandmother.

Maya looked at it.

“It’s pretty.”

Vittorio smiled.

“It belongs to the Costello family.”

Maya looked toward Elena.

Then Luca.

“I already belong to a family.”

Vittorio’s smile tightened.

Luca almost laughed.

Dinner began.

Damian arrived twenty minutes later.

Vittorio appeared surprised.

Damian had been publicly described as missing.

He approached Vittorio near the library.

Hidden microphones captured everything.

“You should not be here,” Vittorio hissed.

“We have a problem.”

“What problem?”

“Vale talked.”

Vittorio’s face changed.

“How much?”

“Everything.”

Vittorio looked toward Luca across the room.

Luca remained in his wheelchair.

He deliberately dropped a glass.

His hand trembled theatrically.

Vittorio watched.

Then relaxed.

“He’s finished anyway.”

Damian lowered his voice.

“What about tonight?”

“We proceed.”

“The guardianship papers?”

“Pierce prepared replacements.”

“And Elena?”

Vittorio’s expression went cold.

“She signs.”

“And if she doesn’t?”

“Then she proves why she’s unfit.”

Federal agents listening from outside heard every word.

But Luca needed more.

He needed the poisoning.

He needed Vittorio directly connected.

Damian asked.

“And Luca?”

Vittorio removed something from his jacket.

A small medical vial.

“His evening medication.”

Damian stared at it.

“You’re doing it yourself?”

“I’m done trusting cowards.”

That was enough.

Marco’s voice sounded quietly in Luca’s earpiece.

“We have him.”

Luca waited.

Vittorio entered the dining room.

He walked toward Luca carrying a glass of water.

“You look tired.”

“I am.”

“Take your medication.”

Luca looked at the glass.

Vittorio placed a capsule beside it.

The room seemed to slow.

Federal agents waited outside.

Marco waited near the hall.

Elena held Maya’s hand.

Luca picked up the capsule.

Vittorio watched closely.

“Go ahead.”

Luca looked at him.

Then he placed the capsule back on the table.

“No.”

Vittorio’s smile disappeared.

“You need it.”

“No.”

“Luca.”

“I said no.”

Vittorio leaned closer.

“You don’t understand what’s happening.”

Luca gripped the arms of his wheelchair.

“Actually…”

He pushed himself upward.

Vittorio stepped back.

The entire room went silent.

Luca’s legs shook.

His face tightened with pain.

But he stood.

For the first time in twelve years, Vittorio looked up at his nephew standing before him.

Luca took one step.

Then another.

Maya began crying.

Not from fear.

From joy.

Vittorio’s face emptied.

“That’s impossible.”

Luca stopped in front of him.

“No.”

His voice remained quiet.

“What you did to me was impossible to forgive.”

Vittorio backed away.

Marco entered behind him.

Federal agents followed.

Luca looked at the poisoned capsule.

“Twelve years.”

Vittorio stared at him.

Luca continued.

“You stole twelve years because you thought the chair made me powerless.”

Vittorio’s eyes moved toward the exits.

Every door was blocked.

Then something unexpected happened.

Vittorio smiled.

“You still don’t understand.”

Luca’s expression hardened.

Vittorio looked toward Maya.

May you like

“The trust was never the real reason.”

And suddenly the room became cold again.
