Chapter 11 - The Will

Roberto’s estate attorney arrived that night.

Her name was Claire Bennett.

She had known Roberto since before Sofía was born.

When she heard what Ethan had discovered, she removed her glasses and sat silently for a long moment.

“Did Vanessa ever see your will?”

“No.”

“Are you certain?”

“Yes.”

Claire opened a leather folder.

“Then she was guessing.”

“Guessing what?”

“That Sofía inherits the controlling family trust if you die before she turns thirty.”

María stood near the doorway.

Roberto stared at Claire.

“And if Sofía is considered incapable of managing the trust?”

“A guardian or trustee could be appointed.”

“Could Vanessa become that person?”

“If she were your spouse and had established herself as Sofía’s primary parental figure, she could attempt it.”

Roberto felt physically ill.

“But we weren’t married.”

“No.”

Claire’s expression hardened.

“And now I strongly recommend you make sure she never has any legal pathway toward that role.”

Roberto walked toward the window.

He remembered Vanessa asking about marriage after the charity gala in Boston.

He remembered her suggesting he update his estate “for peace of mind.”

He remembered her volunteering to attend more appointments with Sofía.

At the time, those things looked like commitment.

Now they looked like positioning.

“Do we know she intended this?”

Ethan answered.

“Not yet.”

“Then we don’t accuse her of it.”

Roberto turned.

“We prove what can be proved.”

Claire nodded.

“That’s the right approach.”

Upstairs, Sofía was awake again.

A nightmare had pulled her from sleep.

This time Roberto was there.

He sat beside her while she listened to the old lullaby her mother used to sing.

Sofía reached toward his face.

Her fingers touched his cheek.

“Are you crying?”

Roberto smiled painfully.

“A little.”

“Why?”

“Because I should have been home more.”

Sofía thought about that.

Then she shook her head.

“You were working.”

“That doesn’t make everything okay.”

“You called me every night.”

“I did.”

“Sometimes I pretended I was already sleepy.”

“Why?”

“So you wouldn’t ask questions.”

Roberto’s chest tightened.

“Because Vanessa told you not to?”

Sofía nodded.

“She said happy children make their fathers want to come home.”

Roberto closed his eyes.

The cruelty of the sentence was extraordinary.

Vanessa had made Sofía believe she needed to hide pain in order to earn love.

Roberto took his daughter’s hand.

“Listen to me.”

Sofía waited.

“You never have to perform happiness for me.”

“You can be angry.”

“You can be sad.”

“You can tell me I made a mistake.”

“You can tell me you need me.”

“You can tell me anything.”

Sofía was quiet.

Then she asked the question Roberto had been dreading.

“Are you going to marry Vanessa?”

“No.”

The answer came instantly.

“Never.”

Sofía released a breath.

Roberto realized she had been carrying that fear alone.

Then she whispered something else.

“She said after you married her, things would be different.”

Roberto stared into the darkness.

“Different how?”

“She said María would leave.”

“And I would go to school far away.”

Roberto held his daughter tighter.

The plan was no longer hidden in bank statements and emails.

Vanessa had already told Sofía exactly what she intended to do.
