Chapter 19 - Eight Fifty-Five

One year after the night Vanessa was discovered, Roberto arrived home at exactly 8:55 PM.
This time, it was intentional.
He carried two boxes of chocolate mousse.
One for Sofía.
One for María, who had developed the unfortunate habit of stealing spoonfuls from Sofía’s dessert.
The mansion was warm.
Music drifted from the living room.
Roberto entered quietly.
Then he stopped.
A glass shattered.
For one terrible second, his body remembered everything.
He rushed toward the sound.
Sofía stood near the dining table.
A broken glass lay on the floor.
María was nearby.
Nobody screamed.
Nobody panicked.
Sofía raised both hands.
“Okay.”
“Nobody move.”
Roberto stared.
María smiled.
Sofía carefully stepped backward.
“I dropped it.”
Roberto waited.
Then Sofía grinned.
“And before you ask, yes, I know I didn’t see it.”
María laughed.
Roberto laughed too.
“No apology?”
“Nope.”
“Good.”
Daniel brought a broom.
Sofía returned to her chair.
That was all.
A broken glass.
Nothing more.
Roberto stood there longer than necessary.
The difference between this night and the night one year earlier was almost impossible to measure.
Same house.
Same marble floor.
Same child.
Completely different world.
Later, after dessert, Sofía handed him a small box.
“What is this?”
“Open it.”
Inside was an inexpensive watch.
Roberto stared at it.
Engraved on the back were four numbers.
8:55.
He looked at Sofía.
“María helped me order it.”
María smiled from the doorway.
Sofía reached across the table.
“You were supposed to come home at nine.”
Roberto took her hand.
“I know.”
“But you didn’t.”
“No.”
“You came early.”
He swallowed.
“Yes.”
Sofía smiled.
“That was a good mistake.”
Roberto looked at the watch again.
For most of his life, he had measured success in numbers.
Revenue.
Growth.
Acquisitions.
Market value.
Hours worked.
Miles traveled.
Now the most important number he owned was five minutes.
Five minutes had revealed a lie.
Five minutes had saved a relationship with his daughter before fear permanently replaced trust.
Five minutes had forced him to become the father he had believed money could help him avoid becoming.
Present.
Listening.
Available.
Human.
He fastened the watch around his wrist.
“I’m never taking this off.”
Sofía smiled.
“You can take it off in the shower.”
Roberto laughed.
May you like
“Fine.”
“Sometimes.”
