Chapter 8 - María's Silence

María sat at the kitchen table after midnight.
For the first time in years, Roberto made coffee himself.
Neither seemed to notice how strange that was.
He placed a cup in front of her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
María looked at the coffee.
“I tried.”
Roberto stopped.
“When?”
“Three months ago.”
He searched his memory.
Nothing came.
“I asked your assistant for a private meeting.”
“Which assistant?”
“Caleb.”
Roberto felt another cold sensation move through him.
Caleb Rhodes had managed his personal schedule for eighteen months.
Vanessa had recommended him.
“What happened?”
“He told me you were unavailable.”
“That sounds possible.”
María shook her head.
“I tried again.”
“And?”
“He said household concerns should go through Vanessa.”
Roberto stared at her.
“I sent you an email.”
“I never received it.”
“I thought you were ignoring me.”
María’s voice cracked for the first time.
“So I stayed close to Sofía instead.”
Roberto sat across from her.
“What did Vanessa do when I was gone?”
María hesitated.
He waited.
“She never hurt Sofía badly.”
Roberto’s eyes sharpened.
“That sentence means she hurt her.”
María swallowed.
“She grabbed her wrist.”
“She shouted.”
“She made her stand alone when she was frightened.”
“She took away the music player after nightmares because she said Sofía was becoming dependent.”
Roberto looked toward the ceiling.
His daughter was asleep one floor above them.
Or trying to sleep.
“What else?”
“Vanessa would move furniture slightly.”
Roberto looked back at María.
“What?”
“Not enough for anyone else to notice.”
“A chair.”
“A side table.”
“A small bench.”
“Sofía would bump into them.”
“Then Vanessa would tell her she was careless.”
Roberto covered his mouth with one hand.
María continued.
“I began moving everything back after Vanessa went upstairs.”
“Why didn’t you confront her?”
“I did.”
“What happened?”
“She threatened my job.”
“You should have come directly to me.”
María finally looked angry.
“I am an employee in a billionaire’s house.”
“You are her father.”
“She wore designer dresses and sat beside you at charity dinners.”
“I wore a uniform.”
“When she told me you would believe her, I believed her.”
Roberto could not argue.
Because for months, he probably would have.
Not entirely.
Not forever.
But long enough.
And for Sofía, long enough mattered.
“I failed both of you.”
María shook her head.
“Do not make this about your guilt.”
He looked at her.
“Make it about what happens tomorrow.”
Roberto remembered those words.
The house grew quiet.
Then Ethan entered carrying his laptop.
“You need to see something.”
He placed the screen on the table.
There were email records from Roberto’s private account.
Messages he had never written.
One was addressed to the Connecticut academy.
Another authorized María’s termination.
Another told Caleb to block all household complaints unless Vanessa approved them.
Roberto stared at the signature.
His name.
His email.
His authority.
All used without his knowledge.

Vanessa had not simply taken advantage of his absence.
She had built a system around it.
