Chapter 15 - The Story Breaks
The financial investigation became public the next Monday.
Not because Roberto released it.
Because authorities requested records from V Holdings.
Reporters connected the company to Vanessa’s cousin within hours.
The story changed immediately.
Vanessa was no longer a grieving partner pushed from a billionaire’s mansion.
She was a woman facing questions about unauthorized transfers and falsified household communications.
Roberto issued one statement.
“My priority is my daughter’s safety and privacy.”
Nothing more.
Vanessa issued six.
Each contradicted the previous one.
First, the transfers were reimbursements.
Then they were gifts.
Then Roberto had verbally approved them.
Then the accounting department had made mistakes.
The story grew louder.
Roberto turned the television off.
Sofía did not need to hear any of it.
Then a former employee called.
Her name was Grace Nolan.
She had worked as a weekend nanny for three months the previous year.
“I saw things.”
Roberto sat upright.
“What things?”
“Vanessa humiliating Sofía.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I tried.”
There it was again.
“I emailed your office.”
“Caleb?”
“Yes.”
“He told me my contract would be terminated if I spread accusations.”
Roberto closed his eyes.
“What did you see?”
Grace described a dinner.
Sofía had reached for the wrong glass.
Vanessa moved it farther away each time the child’s hand approached.
She did it quietly.
Almost playfully.
Then she told Sofía to stop making a mess.
Grace confronted her later.
Vanessa fired her the following morning.
“Would you give a statement?”
Grace hesitated.
“Yes.”
More witnesses followed.
A former driver.
A tutor.
A temporary housekeeper.
None had seen enough alone to understand the pattern.
Together, they created one.
Isolation.
Humiliation.
Control.
Threats.
And always the same protection.
Roberto would not be home until after nine.
That evening, Ethan arrived with another discovery.
“Vanessa tried to access Sofía’s medical records twice after leaving the mansion.”
Roberto looked up sharply.
“How?”
“Using an old household authorization.”
“Did she get anything?”
“No.”
“Why would she try?”
Ethan sat down.
“We don’t know.”
Roberto thought about the competency specialist.
The boarding school.
The estate questions.
The medical records.
A terrible possibility formed.
Vanessa had not simply wanted Sofía gone.
She may have wanted documentation that made her easier to control legally.
Roberto stood.
“This ends now.”
He called every clinic, hospital, school, tutor, financial manager, and attorney connected to Sofía.
Every authorization was changed.
Every password replaced.
Every access point closed.
Then he went upstairs.
Sofía was reading a Braille book with María.
Roberto sat beside her.
“What are you reading?”
“A mystery.”
“Is it good?”
“The dad is terrible at noticing clues.”
María covered a smile.
Roberto laughed.
“Sounds unrealistic.”
Sofía grinned.
“Very unrealistic.”
