Chapter 10 - The House by the Lake

Vale Lake was three hours north of the city.

Adrian had not visited since his father’s funeral.

The road narrowed as they entered the mountains.

Autumn leaves covered the asphalt.

Helena sat in the passenger seat watching trees blur past.

Neither spoke much.

They had spent the previous night learning how much of their history had been manipulated.

Silence felt easier.

When the lake finally appeared between the trees, Helena remembered being nineteen.

Her grandmother had brought her there for two weeks after graduation.

Robert Vale had visited once.

He had spent an afternoon repairing the dock with Adrian.

Helena remembered Adrian jumping into the water fully dressed.

She remembered laughing.

She remembered believing life was simple.

The cabin appeared around the bend.

No security gates.

No marble.

Just weathered wood and a stone chimney.

Adrian parked.

“You okay?”

Helena nodded.

“You?”

“No.”

She appreciated the answer.

They walked toward the boathouse.

The old lock had rusted.

Adrian used a key from his father’s estate.

Inside smelled like cedar and lake water.

Two old canoes hung from the wall.

Fishing equipment sat untouched.

Helena found a faded photograph of Adrian at twelve holding a fish.

She smiled.

“You had terrible hair.”

Adrian looked over.

“That was considered fashionable.”

“No.”

“It wasn’t.”

He laughed softly.

The sound felt strange after everything.

They reached the back wall.

N.B.V.

North Boathouse Vault.

Adrian remembered a small safe his father used to store boat documents.

It was hidden beneath a floor panel.

They lifted it.

A steel door appeared.

Combination lock.

4 - 11 - 18.

Adrian entered the numbers.

Nothing.

Helena frowned.

“Maybe the order?”

“November eighteenth.”

“11 - 18.”

“What’s four?”

Adrian thought.

“Fourth generation.”

“Of what?”

He looked at her.

“Vale men.”

“My grandfather.”

“My father.”

“Me.”

“Noah.”

Helena stared.

“He considered Noah family before he was even born.”

Adrian entered 11 - 18 - 04.

The safe clicked.

Inside were two folders.

A sealed envelope.

And a small velvet box.

Adrian opened the envelope first.

My grandson.

If you ever read this, I am sorry I did not live long enough to meet you.

Helena’s eyes filled.

Adrian continued reading.

Your mother may never know I saw her letter.

Vanessa believes she destroyed it before I could read it.

She is wrong.

I knew you were coming.

I created something for you before I died.

Not because you are a Vale.

Because every child deserves to begin life without paying for the mistakes of adults.

Adrian stopped.

Helena wiped her cheek.

The letter continued.

Your mother’s trust was used without her consent.

I could not restore everything without alerting Vanessa and Martin.

Instead I placed enough assets here to ensure Helena and her child would someday be protected.

The legal papers are in the second folder.

Adrian opened it.

A trust.

Beneficiary.

Child of Helena Brooks.

Value at creation.

Twelve million dollars.

Current estimated value.

More than forty million.

Helena stared at the number.

“No.”

Adrian almost smiled through the sadness.

“You keep saying that when money appears.”

“Because it keeps being ridiculous.”

He handed her the folder.

“It’s Noah’s.”

“I don’t want him growing up thinking money makes him important.”

“Neither do I.”

Helena looked at Adrian.

“That might be the first thing we completely agree on.”

He opened the velvet box.

Inside was a small silver compass.

Engraved on the back.

For the boy who finds his own direction.

Adrian stared at it for a long time.

Helena sat beside him on the floor.

“Your father tried.”

“Too late.”

“But he tried.”

Adrian nodded.

“That’s more than I thought yesterday.”

He closed the box.

Helena looked toward the lake.

“What happens now?”

“Martin goes to prison.”

“Vanessa probably does too.”

“The trust gets restored.”

“Sterling Group gets dismantled.”

“I didn’t mean the money.”

Adrian looked at her.

“I know.”

Helena continued.

“What happens with us?”

Adrian did not answer immediately.

“I want to be Noah’s father.”

“You are his father.”

“I want to earn being his dad.”

Helena appreciated the distinction.

“And me?”

Adrian looked toward the water.

“I don’t know what I’m allowed to want.”

She felt something in her chest tighten.

“You can want anything.”

“That doesn’t mean you get it.”

He smiled faintly.

“That sounds like you.”

Helena looked at him.

“I loved you.”

“I know.”

“No.”

“I mean I loved you for years after you left.”

Adrian’s smile disappeared.

“I hated myself for it.”

“I tried to stop.”

“I couldn’t.”

“Then eventually I did.”

Adrian absorbed every word.

“I never stopped.”

Helena looked away.

“That isn’t fair.”

“I know.”

“You thought I chose someone else.”

“I still never stopped.”

“Adrian.”

“I’m not asking you for anything.”

“I just don’t want another lie between us.”

Helena stood and walked toward the dock.

Adrian followed.

The lake was perfectly still.

For a moment, they simply stood beside each other.

Then Adrian’s phone rang.

Claire.

He answered.

His face changed almost immediately.

“What?”

Helena turned.

Adrian listened.

“When?”

He ended the call.

“What happened?”

Adrian looked at her.

“Vanessa made bail.”

Helena stared.

“That quickly?”

“Financial charges aren’t enough to hold her.”

“What about my grandmother?”

“Martin’s statement still needs corroboration.”

“So where is she?”

Adrian looked toward the road.

“Nobody knows.”

Helena’s phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

Noah standing beside Maya’s farmhouse.

Taken minutes ago.

Below it were six words.

COME ALONE OR HE LEARNS EVERYTHING.

Helena felt the world stop.

Adrian reached for the phone.

She pulled it away.

“No.”

“What?”

“She wants me alone.”

“You’re not going anywhere alone.”

Helena stared at the photograph.

Vanessa had lost her company.

Her reputation.

Her freedom.

People with nothing left were unpredictable.

May you like

Helena looked at Adrian.

“This ends today.”
