Chapter 14 - The Woman Behind the Glass

Vanessa looked older behind prison glass.
Not physically.
Something in her posture had changed.
There was no audience to impress.
No staff to command.
No staircase to descend.
Just a plastic chair and a telephone.
Helena sat opposite her.
She had almost refused the visit.
Then Vanessa’s attorney said the words that changed her mind.
Martin Reese has ordered a witness silenced.
Helena lifted the phone.
Vanessa did the same.
“You look well.”
Helena almost smiled.
“You asked me here to discuss my appearance?”
“No.”
Vanessa looked down.
“Martin knows I’m cooperating.”
“He wants you dead?”
“Yes.”
“Why tell me?”
“Because his people may believe you have copies of my evidence.”
“I do.”
Vanessa nodded.
“Then he may target you too.”
Helena’s expression hardened.
“Again.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Stop saying that.”
Vanessa looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because you use apologies the way you used money.”
“To make yourself feel like you paid the bill.”
Vanessa absorbed that quietly.
“You’re right.”
Helena sighed.
“What does Martin have left?”
“A ledger.”
“Different from the one in the bank?”
“Yes.”
“This one lists people he paid personally.”
“Judges.”
“Inspectors.”
“Corporate investigators.”
“Where is it?”
“I don’t know.”
Helena stared.
“Then why am I here?”
“Because I know who does.”
“Who?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“Claire.”
Helena froze.
“Adrian’s assistant?”
“Yes.”
“That’s impossible.”
“Claire worked for Martin before Adrian hired her.”
Helena immediately thought of Noah.
Claire had watched him.
Driven him.
Stayed with him at the hotel.
Trust cracked through Helena’s chest.
“Does Adrian know?”
“No.”
Helena stood.
Vanessa pressed the phone closer.
“Helena.”
She stopped.
Vanessa continued.
“I don’t know if Claire is still loyal to Martin.”
“She may have changed sides.”
“But do not assume she did.”
Helena left without another word.
She called Adrian from the parking lot.
No answer.
She called again.
Nothing.
Then she called the house.
Noah answered.
“Mom.”
“Where’s Dad?”
“He went to the foundation.”
“Who’s with you?”
“Claire.”
Helena closed her eyes.
“Okay.”
“Listen carefully.”
“Go to your room.”
“Lock the door.”
Noah laughed.
“Why?”
“Because we’re playing a game.”
“You have to stay in your room until Dad gets home.”
“That’s boring.”
“I know.”
“Can I bring snacks?”
“Yes.”
“All the snacks.”
“Deal.”
Helena ended the call.
Then dialed Adrian again.
This time he answered.
“I was in a meeting.”
“Claire worked for Martin.”
Silence.
“What?”
“Vanessa told me.”
“I’m calling security.”
“Do it now.”
Adrian left the foundation.
Security reached the house seven minutes later.
Claire was in the kitchen.
Noah was safely locked upstairs.
Nobody was hurt.
Claire did not resist when investigators arrived.
She simply sat at the table and cried.
Helena reached the house moments after Adrian.
She ran upstairs first.
Noah opened his door holding a bag of chips.
“I won.”
Helena hugged him.
“Yes.”
“You won.”
Downstairs, Claire sat between two investigators.
Adrian stood across from her.
“You worked for Martin.”
Claire nodded.
“Eight years ago.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I was ashamed.”
“That’s not enough.”
“I know.”
“Did he send you to me?”
“At first.”
Adrian’s face hardened.
Helena entered.
Claire looked at her.
“I never hurt Noah.”
“Did you report on him?”
“No.”
“Did you report on me?”
Claire cried harder.
“In the beginning.”
“How long?”
“Three months.”
“Then I stopped.”
“Why?”
Claire looked at Adrian.
“Because I realized Martin had lied about him.”
“What did he tell you?”
“That Adrian was corrupt.”
“That he was trying to steal Sterling Group.”
“That Vanessa needed protection.”
Helena almost laughed at the inversion.
Claire continued.
“When I learned the truth, I started copying Martin’s records.”
Adrian stared.
“You have the ledger.”
Claire nodded.
“Where?”
She looked toward the backyard.
“Under the greenhouse floor.”
The investigators exchanged glances.
Thirty minutes later, they recovered a waterproof case.
Inside was Martin’s private ledger.
Names.
Payments.
Dates.
Enough to dismantle the final pieces of his network.
Claire looked at Helena.
“I know you won’t forgive me.”
“That isn’t what matters right now.”
“I care about Noah.”
Helena believed her.
That was the difficult part.
People could betray you and still care.
People could change after doing terrible things.
Helena was learning that truth everywhere she looked.
Claire was arrested for her earlier participation.
Her cooperation reduced the charges.
Martin lost his leverage.
Within days, several officials resigned.
Two executives were arrested.
A judge recused himself from Vanessa’s case.
The network was finally collapsing.
Adrian stood with Helena outside the courthouse after Claire entered her plea.
“You trusted her.”
“So did you.”
“I brought her near Noah.”
“So did I.”
Adrian looked at Helena.
“You’re getting annoyingly good at stopping my guilt.”
“Years of practice with my own.”
He reached for her hand.
She let him take it.
Across the street, reporters shouted questions.
For once, Helena did not feel like hiding.
She had spent six years living inside stories other people created for her.
Poor woman.
Abandoned woman.
Maid.
Victim.
Now she was beginning to understand something.
May you like
Survival was not an identity.
It was simply what she had done until she was ready to live again.
