Chapter 18 - The Wedding at the Lake

Helena refused to marry at the villa.

Too many memories.

Too many reporters knew the location.

She chose Vale Lake.

The ceremony took place beside the water.

Forty guests.

Wildflowers.

Wooden chairs.

No chandeliers.

No marble.

No spectacle.

Maya stood beside Helena.

Noah stood beside Adrian wearing a navy suit and the silver compass in his pocket.

Before the ceremony, Helena stood inside the cabin looking at herself in the mirror.

Her dress was simple ivory silk.

Her hair was pinned into a loose bun.

Maya adjusted one strand.

“Nervous?”

“Yes.”

“Want to run?”

“No.”

“That sounds healthy.”

Helena smiled.

“I used to think getting married meant trusting someone not to hurt you.”

“And now?”

“I think it means trusting yourself enough to survive even if life changes.”

Maya nodded.

“That’s annoyingly mature.”

“I’ve had an exhausting few years.”

Music began outside.

Helena walked toward the lake.

Adrian saw her.

Everything else disappeared from his face.

Noah whispered loudly.

“Dad, breathe.”

Guests laughed.

Adrian laughed too.

Helena reached them.

Noah hugged her before sitting down.

The officiant spoke briefly.

Nobody wanted a long ceremony.

When Adrian began his vows, he did not use a prepared speech.

“I once promised Helena I would come back.”

“I failed that promise because I let other people tell me what she wanted instead of finding out myself.”

“I will never make that mistake again.”

“I promise to ask.”

“To listen.”

“To show up.”

“And when I have to leave, I promise to tell you exactly when I’m coming home.”

Helena’s eyes filled.

Her vows were shorter.

“Six years ago, I believed love was something that happened to you.”

“Now I know love is something people choose repeatedly.”

“I choose you.”

“I choose Noah.”

“I choose the life we build when nobody else is writing the story for us.”

Adrian smiled through tears.

They exchanged rings.

Noah clapped before the officiant finished.

Everyone laughed.

Then the officiant pronounced them married.

Adrian kissed Helena.

No fireworks.

No dramatic music.

Just applause across the lake.

At the reception, Noah made a speech without permission.

“Hi.”

“I’m Noah.”

Everyone laughed.

“I’m their kid.”

“Obviously.”

More laughter.

“My mom says Dad is stubborn.”

“Dad says Mom is more stubborn.”

“I think they are both right.”

Helena covered her face.

Adrian applauded.

Noah continued.

“I’m happy they got married because now Dad can’t leave.”

The laughter disappeared.

Adrian looked at Helena.

Noah did not realize the weight of what he said.

Adrian crouched beside him.

“I could never leave you.”

Noah looked at him.

“Promise?”

“Promise.”

Noah hugged him.

Guests quietly wiped tears.

Helena looked toward the water.

For years she had believed the story ended when Adrian left.

Then she believed it began again when he entered Sterling Villa.

She understood now that stories rarely have one beginning.

They begin every time someone makes a different choice.

Late that evening, after guests left, Helena and Adrian sat on the dock.

Her shoes were gone.

His tie was loose.

“Mrs. Vale.”

Helena looked at him.

“Don’t get used to it.”

“You changed your name.”

“I hyphenated.”

“Mrs. Brooks-Vale.”

“That’s better.”

He smiled.

“Happy?”

Helena looked toward the cabin.

Noah slept inside.

Maya had promised to stay with him.

The lake reflected thousands of stars.

“Yes.”

Adrian took her hand.

“So am I.”

A car approached along the distant road.

Headlights appeared through the trees.

Adrian frowned.

“Nobody else should be coming.”

The vehicle stopped near the cabin.

A woman stepped out.

Vanessa.

Helena stood.

Adrian immediately stiffened.

Vanessa remained far away.

She held an envelope.

“I’m sorry.”

“I know I shouldn’t be here.”

Adrian’s voice was cold.

“Then why are you?”

Vanessa held out the envelope.

“Because I found something when my belongings were released.”

“It belongs to Helena.”

Helena approached cautiously.

Vanessa handed her the envelope.

Inside was one final letter from Evelyn.

Helena recognized the handwriting immediately.

She looked at Vanessa.

“Where was this?”

“In a jewelry box I hadn’t opened in years.”

“I think Evelyn gave it to Robert.”

“Somehow it ended up with me.”

Helena opened it.

My Helena.

If life becomes harder than you believe you can bear, remember this.

Nothing another person takes from you can erase who you are.

Money can return.

Homes can be rebuilt.

Love can find another road.

Do not spend your life becoming hard simply because other people were cruel.

Stay kind.

But never confuse kindness with surrender.

Helena stopped reading.

Tears blurred the page.

Vanessa turned to leave.

Helena called after her.

“Vanessa.”

She stopped.

“Thank you for bringing it.”

Vanessa nodded.

“That’s more kindness than I deserve.”

Helena looked at the letter.

“Probably.”

Vanessa almost smiled.

Then walked back toward her car.

Adrian placed an arm around Helena.

“You okay?”

Helena nodded.

May you like

“Yes.”

For once, it was completely true.
