Chapter 11 - Vanessa’s Last Bargain

Helena did not go alone.
She simply made Vanessa believe she did.
The meeting location arrived twenty minutes later.
An abandoned equestrian estate thirty miles from Maya’s farmhouse.
Vanessa had once hosted charity events there.
Now the property belonged to a bank.
Adrian’s security surrounded the area before Helena arrived.
Federal agents remained farther back.
Nobody wanted Vanessa panicking if she saw law enforcement.
Helena drove through the gate at 4:13 p.m.
Vanessa stood inside the old stable.
No weapon visible.
No Martin.
No accomplices.
Just Vanessa.
She looked smaller without the villa around her.
Helena stopped ten feet away.
“Where is Noah?”
“Safe.”
“You sent me a picture.”
“I didn’t take it.”
“Who did?”
Vanessa looked toward the stable door.
“A man Martin hired years ago.”
“He still works for him.”
“Martin is in custody.”
“He prepared for that.”
Helena’s stomach tightened.
“What do you want?”
“Protection.”
Helena almost laughed.
“From me?”
“From Martin’s people.”
“You expect me to protect you?”
“I expect Adrian to.”
“Why would he?”
“Because I have something he needs.”
Helena folded her arms.
“What?”
Vanessa removed a small flash drive from her pocket.
“Martin recorded everything.”
“Payments.”
“Threats.”
“Political favors.”
“People who helped him.”
“People who still have power.”
Helena stared at it.
“Give it to the investigators.”
“I do that and I’m dead before trial.”
“So this is leverage.”
“Yes.”
“At least you finally call it what it is.”
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“I know you hate me.”
“I don’t.”
That answer surprised her.
Helena continued.
“Hate requires energy.”
“I’m done giving you mine.”
Vanessa looked away.
“You sound like Evelyn.”
Helena’s expression changed.
“Don’t say her name.”
“She said almost the same thing.”
“When?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“The week before she died.”
Helena stepped closer.
“You spoke to my grandmother?”
“Yes.”
“She knew I was moving money.”
“She begged me to stop.”
“Did you threaten her?”
“No.”
“Did Martin?”
“Yes.”
“And you did nothing.”
Vanessa looked at Helena.
“No.”
“I did nothing.”
Helena realized that was Vanessa’s pattern.
She rarely needed to commit the worst act herself.
She created the conditions.
Then watched.
Vanessa handed over the flash drive.
“Adrian can protect me.”
“I’m not promising anything.”
“I know.”
“Where is Noah?”
Vanessa’s voice softened.
“At the farmhouse.”
“He hasn’t been touched.”
“Then why the photograph?”
“To make sure you came.”
Helena’s anger flashed.
“You used my son.”
“I needed you to listen.”
“You could have called.”
“You wouldn’t have come.”
“You’re right.”
A noise sounded outside.
Vanessa froze.
“That isn’t Adrian?”
Helena listened.
Vehicle doors.
More than one.
Vanessa’s face drained.
“They found me.”
“Who?”
“Martin’s cleanup crew.”
Helena’s phone was already in her hand.
She pressed Adrian’s emergency signal.
Men entered through the far side of the stable.
Three.
Dark jackets.
Gloves.
One carried a metal case.
Vanessa backed away.
Helena whispered.
“Stay behind me.”
Vanessa almost laughed.
“You’re protecting me?”
“I’m protecting the evidence.”
The first man moved forward.
Adrian’s security team entered from both sides.
“Hands where we can see them.”
Chaos lasted less than thirty seconds.
No gunfight.
No dramatic chase.
Just trained professionals overwhelming three men who had expected two frightened women.
Federal agents arrived minutes later.
One of the men carried photographs of Helena.
Noah.
Adrian.
And Vanessa.
A list inside the metal case contained addresses.
Maya’s farmhouse was one.
Helena’s heart dropped.
She called immediately.
Maya answered.
“We’re fine.”
Helena closed her eyes.
“Lock the doors anyway.”
Vanessa sat on an overturned crate.
Her hands shook.
Adrian entered.
He stopped when he saw her.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Vanessa stood.
“Adrian.”
“Don’t.”
She swallowed.
“I’m sorry.”
Adrian looked at her.
“For which year?”
Vanessa flinched.
He continued.
“The year you stole Helena’s letters?”
“The year you hid Noah?”
“The year you stole from her trust?”
“Or the three minutes you watched my father die?”
Vanessa began crying.
Adrian’s expression remained empty.
“I loved you like a mother.”
“I know.”
“No.”
“You don’t.”
“I defended you.”
“When everyone said you cared more about control than people, I defended you.”
“When my father warned me, I defended you.”
“You made me feel stupid for trusting you.”
Vanessa whispered.
“I did love you.”
Adrian nodded.
“I believe you.”
She looked surprised.
“That’s what makes it worse.”
Agents approached.
Vanessa handed them the flash drive.
Before they took her away, she looked at Helena.
“You won.”
Helena shook her head.
“This was never a game.”
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“No.”
“I suppose that was another thing I misunderstood.”
They led her away.
Adrian stood beside Helena.
“It’s over.”
Helena watched the vehicle leave.
“No.”
“What?”
She looked at him.
“Martin still has people.”
“We still don’t know what’s on that drive.”
“And Noah is still two hours away.”
Adrian nodded.
“Then we go get him.”
They reached Maya’s farmhouse after dark.
Noah ran out before Helena reached the porch.
She held him so tightly he complained.
“Mom.”
“I need air.”
“Sorry.”
Adrian stood a few feet away.
Noah looked at him.
Then ran over and hugged him.
Adrian froze.
His arms slowly closed around his son.
“Hey.”
Noah pulled back.
“Maya has goats.”
“I heard.”
“One hates me.”
“That seems unlikely.”
“He ate my homework.”
Adrian looked toward Helena.
“Was that homework completed?”
Noah thought.
“Mostly.”
Adrian smiled.
“Convenient goat.”
For the first time in days, Helena laughed without fear.
That night Noah fell asleep on the couch between them.
Adrian looked at Helena over their son’s head.
“I want this.”
Helena knew exactly what he meant.
May you like
That scared her more than she expected.
Because part of her wanted it too.
