Chapter 1 - Three Seconds

Claire had three seconds to decide whether fear would control her again.
Julian stood only a few feet away, his polished shoes reflecting in the marble floor beneath the chandeliers.
His face had changed completely.
The stunned husband was gone.
The calculating man she had once loved had returned.
“Give me that.”
Claire instinctively touched the thin gold wedding band hanging from the chain around her neck.
For one terrible moment, she thought Julian meant the ring.
Then she saw his eyes shift toward the pocket of her apron.
Her blood turned cold.
He knew.
Maybe he did not know exactly what she had found, but he knew enough to be afraid.
The glamorous blonde woman beside him stepped back.
Her name was Vanessa Hawthorne.
Claire knew that because every employee in the Grand Meridian Hotel knew the Hawthorne family.
Vanessa was the only daughter of billionaire hotel owner Conrad Hawthorne.
She was also rumored to be engaged to Julian.
That rumor suddenly looked very real.
Vanessa stared at Julian.
“What is she carrying?”
Julian did not look at her.
“Nothing that concerns you.”
That was his first mistake.
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
Claire remembered that look.
Powerful women did not enjoy being dismissed in their own buildings.
Julian moved closer.
“Claire, hand it over.”
“I don’t know what you mean.”
“Don’t make this difficult.”
Claire almost laughed.
Difficult.
He had faked his death.
He had buried her under debts.
He had stolen years from her life.
And now he was worried she might make things difficult.
Claire slowly stood.
Her knees trembled, but she forced herself upright.
Hotel guests had formed a silent half circle around them.
A receptionist had already lifted her phone.
Someone was recording.
Claire saw it.
Julian saw it too.
His jaw tightened.
That changed everything.
He could not simply grab her now.
He smiled suddenly.
It was the warm public smile Claire remembered from charity galas and business dinners.
“My wife has clearly been through something traumatic.”
Claire felt sick.
“My name is Claire Bennett Mercer.”
A murmur passed through the lobby.
Julian’s smile froze.
“And the man standing in front of me is Julian Mercer.”
Vanessa looked sharply at him.
Claire continued.
“He was declared dead six months ago.”
The lobby became completely silent.
Julian whispered through his smile.
“Stop.”
Claire reached into her apron.
His hand twitched.
Security guards started moving.
Claire pulled out the USB drive.

She raised it above her head.
“And this,” she said, “may explain why.”
