Chapter 12 - The House She Lost

Claire had not returned to Maple Ridge in six months.
The house no longer belonged to her.
After Julian’s death, creditors had forced a sale.
A retired couple from Arizona now owned it.
At dawn, police obtained permission to search the property.
Claire went with them.
She did not know why.
Maybe she needed to see what remained.
The front door was painted green now.
The roses she had planted were gone.
The porch swing Julian built during their second summer together had disappeared.
Inside, strangers’ photographs filled the walls.
Claire felt like a ghost walking through someone else’s life.
Julian had told police exactly where to look.
Behind the brick fireplace.
A loose stone near the floor.
Claire remembered Julian repairing that fireplace.
She had brought him lemonade.
He had kissed her and complained about the dust.
The memory made her nauseous.
An officer removed the brick.
Behind it was a narrow metal compartment.
Empty.
Cole stared inside.
“Someone got here first.”
Claire looked around.
Nothing appeared disturbed.
The homeowners said no one had entered recently.
Then Claire noticed the floor.
A faint scratch crossed one wooden board.
Fresh.
She knelt.
The board lifted.
Beneath it was a small envelope.
Claire recognized Julian’s handwriting.
CLAIRE.
Her hands shook as she opened it.
Inside was a key.
And a note.
If you are reading this, I failed.
Trust no one who knows about the ledger.
Not Richard.
Not Conrad.
Not Vanessa.
Not even me.
Claire read the last line twice.
Cole asked, “What key?”
Claire turned it over.
A number was engraved into the metal.
Vanessa frowned.
“That looks like one of ours.”
“One of what?”
“Old hotel deposit-box keys.”
Conrad stared at his daughter.
“We discontinued those years ago.”
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“Except at the Ashford.”
Claire remembered the name.
The Ashford was the oldest property in the Hawthorne portfolio.
It had been closed for renovation for nearly a year.
Cole asked, “Where is it?”
“Forty minutes north.”
Claire held the key tightly.
Then her phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
She opened the message.
A photograph appeared.
Richard Hawthorne sat tied to a chair.
Blood ran down his temple.
Beside him stood Stephen Marr.
May you like
The message beneath the picture contained only six words.
Bring the key or he dies.
