Chapter 5 - A Name Beneath the Numbers
Detective Ethan Cole refused to let Julian leave immediately.
That surprised Claire.
It also enraged Julian.
Cole was in his early forties, broad shouldered, patient, and unimpressed by money.
He separated Claire, Julian, and Vanessa for questioning.
Claire told him everything.
The false death.
The debt notices.
The vanished accounts.
The ruined house.
The USB.
Cole listened without interrupting.
When she finished, he asked one question.
“Where is the drive?”
Claire looked through the glass door toward Julian.
“I’d rather not say yet.”
Cole nodded.
“I understand.”
“You do?”
“I understand why you don’t trust people.”
That answer mattered.
Claire slipped off her shoe.
She removed the USB.
Cole raised his eyebrows.
“I need a copy before I surrender this.”
“That can be arranged.”
Vanessa provided a laptop from the hotel’s legal office.
Under police supervision, they opened the drive.
The first folders contained exactly what Claire expected.
Fake death records.
Insurance communications.
Offshore accounts.
Payments to lawyers.
Travel documents under different names.
Then they opened a folder labeled HARBOR.
Inside were hundreds of transactions.
The numbers were enormous.
Fifteen million dollars.
Twenty-two million.
Forty-one million.
The money moved through hotels, charities, shipping firms, and real estate companies.
Vanessa leaned closer to the screen.
“I know these companies.”
Claire looked at her.
“Which ones?”
“Some belong to Hawthorne Hospitality.”
Cole turned.
“Legitimate companies?”
“Yes.”
Vanessa scrolled.
Her face slowly drained of color.
“No.”
“What?”
“These account numbers are wrong.”
Claire stared at the screen.
Vanessa pointed.
“They copied the names of our companies, but these aren’t our accounts.”
Cole understood immediately.
“Someone is laundering money under your family’s corporate identity.”
Vanessa nodded.
Then Claire saw a name.
CONRAD HAWTHORNE.
Vanessa’s father.
The next file contained scanned authorization documents carrying Conrad’s signature.
Vanessa whispered.
“That signature is real.”
Claire felt the room grow colder.
Cole asked, “Would your father authorize these transfers?”
“No.”
Vanessa answered too quickly.
Cole noticed.
“So there’s uncertainty.”
Vanessa looked angry.
“My father is difficult.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
Before she could answer, Claire spotted another folder.
MERCER CONTINGENCY.
Her hand froze over the mouse.
She opened it.
There were only three documents.
The first concerned Julian.
The second concerned Claire.
The third was a scheduled payment.
Recipient unknown.
Amount: $500,000.
Release condition: DEATH OF CLAIRE BENNETT MERCER.
No one spoke.
Claire felt all the air leave her lungs.
Cole immediately closed the laptop.
“We are moving you somewhere secure.”
Claire looked toward the glass.
Julian was watching her.

And for the first time since seeing him alive, she wondered whether Julian had been trying to destroy her financially.
Or whether someone had expected him to destroy her completely.
