Chapter 3 - Smoke Behind the Door

The fire alarm erupted seconds later.

Guests screamed as flashing lights began pulsing across the lobby.

Hotel employees rushed toward emergency exits.

Security guards started directing people outside.

Claire did not move.

She stared at Julian.

He stared back.

The calmness in his face frightened her more than panic would have.

Someone had set that fire.

She knew it.

Julian knew she knew it.

Vanessa grabbed Claire’s arm.

“We’re leaving.”

Claire resisted.

“The computer.”

“If there’s a fire, the computer is already gone.”

“The server backups might not be.”

Julian stepped between them.

“You both need to get outside.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“You sound strangely concerned.”

“I am concerned.”

“For us?”

Julian’s eyes flickered.

“For everyone.”

A hotel employee appeared from the corridor.

“Fire department is on the way.”

Black smoke began curling beneath the doorway leading toward the administrative offices.

Claire coughed.

Vanessa pulled her toward the main entrance.

Julian followed.

Outside, evening traffic had slowed as hotel guests gathered on the sidewalk.

Sirens approached in the distance.

Claire’s hands shook uncontrollably.

Vanessa noticed.

“You still have the drive?”

Claire touched her apron pocket.

“Yes.”

“Give it to me.”

Claire backed away.

“No.”

Vanessa’s expression sharpened.

“This is my family’s hotel.”

“And he is your fiancé.”

Vanessa flinched.

Claire immediately regretted how harshly she said it.

But she did not apologize.

Trust had cost her too much already.

Vanessa looked toward Julian.

He was speaking quietly with a security officer.

Something about the conversation looked wrong.

The guard nodded once and walked away from the crowd.

Claire watched him disappear around the side of the building.

“Who is that?”

Vanessa followed her gaze.

“Marcus Vale.”

“Do you trust him?”

Vanessa hesitated.

That was enough.

Claire reached inside her apron and removed the USB.

She slipped it into her shoe.

Vanessa raised an eyebrow.

“Smart.”

Claire placed a folded receipt inside the empty apron pocket.

Thirty seconds later, Marcus returned.

He approached Julian.

Then he looked directly at Claire.

“Ms. Bennett, hotel policy requires us to secure any property removed from management offices.”

Claire felt her heartbeat accelerate.

Julian did not look at her.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“She gives you nothing.”

Marcus remained calm.

“I’m following protocol.”

“My family writes the protocol.”

Marcus looked at Julian.

That small movement told Claire everything.

She reached into her apron pocket and handed him the folded receipt.

Marcus took it.

Julian’s shoulders relaxed.

Claire almost smiled.

Then Marcus unfolded it.

His eyes narrowed.

The paper was empty.

Julian turned toward Claire.

The hatred on his face was unmistakable.

And Claire finally understood.

May you like

The USB was not merely evidence.

It was something Julian was willing to burn a hotel to recover.
