Chapter 14 - The BreachThe rain had returned by nightfall, turning the city streets into slick, black mirrors.

David drove Sarah's nondescript sedan through the industrial district, staying far below the speed limit to avoid attention. Ethan was asleep in the backseat, exhausted by the day's abrupt chaos. Sarah sat in the passenger seat, furiously typing on her laptop, connected to the dark web via a secure VPN.

"I'm trying to find out who she hired," Sarah muttered, the blue light of the screen reflecting in her glasses. "Marcus was muscle. But the drone, the tracking... this is someone highly trained."

"She has limitless funds, Sarah. She could have hired a former intelligence operative for all we know," David said, his eyes scanning the rearview mirror every ten seconds.

"Wait," Sarah said, her typing stopping abruptly. "Oh my god."

"What is it?"

"David, pull over. Pull into this alley. Now."

David didn't question her tone. He whipped the steering wheel, guiding the sedan into a narrow, trash-strewn alley between two abandoned warehouses. He killed the headlights and the engine.

"Talk to me," David demanded.

Sarah turned the laptop toward him. Her hands were shaking violently.

"I wasn't looking at the dark web," Sarah choked out. "I had a script running to monitor federal police scanners for your name. David... they just issued an APB for you."

David stared at the screen. "An All Points Bulletin? For what? Protective custody?"

"For Murder in the First Degree," Sarah said, her voice breaking. "They think you killed Marcus in the hospital. They found evidence placing you at the scene. They think you're a flight risk and a dangerous vigilante."

The air in the car evaporated.

David felt like he had been punched in the gut. Evelyn hadn't just tracked them. She had completely flipped the chessboard.

"She framed me," David whispered, the reality crashing down on him. "She killed her own man to frame me. If the cops catch us, they'll arrest me. They'll take Ethan."

"And put him in the system," Sarah finished, wiping a tear from her eye. "Where Evelyn can easily get to him."

Suddenly, a bright, blinding light flooded the alleyway.

David flinched, shielding his eyes. An unmarked black SUV had just pulled up to the entrance of the alley, blocking their only exit. The high beams were on, blinding them.

"Get down!" David roared, shoving Sarah's head below the dashboard and reaching into his waistband for his Glock.

Two men stepped out of the SUV. They weren't wearing police uniforms. They were wearing tactical gear, heavily armed, their faces covered by black ski masks.

"They aren't cops," David realized. "It's a hit squad."

The men raised suppressed submachine guns and opened fire.

THWIP-THWIP-THWIP-THWIP!

The windshield of the sedan shattered into a million pieces. The heavy caliber bullets tore through the leather seats. David threw his body backward, covering Ethan on the floorboard of the back seat, praying the engine block would absorb the brunt of the assault.

"Sarah! Are you hit?!" David screamed over the deafening sound of shattering glass and tearing metal.

"No!" she screamed back, curled in a tight ball on the floor mat.

The gunfire stopped.

David heard the crunch of tactical boots on broken glass, slowly approaching the riddled car. They were coming to finish the job.

David took a deep breath, pushing down the primal terror that threatened to freeze his blood. He gripped his pistol, his knuckles white. He had exactly fourteen rounds. He was outgunned and outmaneuvered.

But he was a father. And a father cornered was the most dangerous creature on earth.

He waited until the footsteps were right outside the driver's side door.

David kicked the heavy car door open with both feet. The metal slammed into the closest gunman, knocking him backward into the rain-soaked brick wall.

David rolled out of the car, ignoring the shards of glass biting into his arms. He didn't hesitate. He leveled his Glock and fired twice into the chest of the second gunman. The man grunted, stumbling back, his body armor absorbing the lethal impact, but the kinetic force knocked him off his feet.

The first man recovered, raising his weapon.

David fired again. This time, he aimed for the gap in the armor. The bullet caught the man in the thigh. He screamed, collapsing to the asphalt.

David didn't wait to see if they would get back up. He grabbed a smoke grenade from his duffel bag—a leftover from his previous life's security stash—pulled the pin, and tossed it at their feet.

Thick, blinding white smoke instantly filled the narrow alleyway.

David turned back to the car. "Sarah! Out! Now!"

May you like

He grabbed Ethan, hauling the terrified, crying boy into his arms. Sarah scrambled out of the passenger side, her laptop clutched tightly to her chest.

They ran blindly through the smoke, plunging deeper into the maze of the abandoned warehouse district, leaving the ruined car and their old lives burning behind them.
