Chapter 8 - Unmasking the MonsterThe crunch of tires on gravel signaled their arrival.

David stood perfectly still in the center of the grand living room. The room was an architectural masterpiece—vaulted ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the estate, and a massive marble fireplace. Right now, it felt like a colosseum.

The front door clicked open.

Claire walked in first. She looked stunning, dressed in a tailored black suit, holding an umbrella perfectly over her head. Behind her was Marcus Vance. He was a mountain of a man, easily six-foot-four, wearing a tactical jacket over a black turtleneck. His eyes scanned the room with professional, lethal efficiency. His right hand rested casually on the butt of a holstered weapon.

"David," Claire said, folding her umbrella with a neat snap. "You look terrible."

David kept his hands visible, hanging loosely at his sides. He slumped his shoulders. "I'm here. Just like you asked."

Marcus stepped forward, his eyes darting around. "Where's the kid?"

"He's in the car," David lied, his voice trembling. "He's asleep. I wanted to talk to you first. To make sure you're going to keep your word."

Claire rolled her eyes, walking gracefully toward the marble fireplace. She ran a manicured finger over the mantle, checking for dust.

"My word?" she scoffed. "David, you really are a fool. Did you honestly think I was going to let you walk away? After you broke my garage door and ruined my morning?"

"I don't understand," David stammered, playing the victim. "You said you'd call off the police. I know about the insurance money, Claire. Just take it! Fake my death, whatever you need. Just let Ethan go."

Claire turned to face him, a wicked grin spreading across her face. She was practically glowing with arrogance. She loved this. She loved the power.

"Fake your death? Why would I do that when Marcus here is so good at making real deaths look like tragic accidents?" Claire gestured lazily to the giant man.

David forced himself to look terrified. "You're going to kill me?"

"Of course I am," Claire said, walking slowly toward him. "It's really a shame you caught me on the roof with Ethan. He was supposed to slip and fall on his own. It would have been so heartbreaking. The stress of losing his beloved son would have driven his poor, bankrupt father to take his own life. A tragic murder-suicide."

"He's just a little boy," David whispered. "Why him? Why us?"

"Because you were easy," Claire spat, her mask fully off now. Her eyes were cold and dead. "You were drowning in debt. You were desperate for a mother for your brat. I spent two years playing the loving wife, David. Do you know how boring that was? Having to pretend to care about his stupid school projects? Having to hide the bruises where the teachers wouldn't see?"

She stepped right into David's personal space, looking up into his eyes.

"The best part was making him keep the secret," she whispered, her breath ghosting over his face. "Telling him that if he cried, I would hurt you. He was so terrified. So pathetic."

David’s blood roared in his ears. Every instinct screamed at him to wrap his hands around her throat. But he needed the confession on tape. Every single word.

"Just like the girl in Oregon," David said softly.

Claire froze. The smug smile vanished from her face.

Marcus instantly drew his gun, aiming it directly at David's chest. "How does he know about Oregon, Evelyn?"

Claire—Evelyn—stared at David, her eyes narrowing into dangerous slits. "It doesn't matter what he knows. The kid isn't in the car, Marcus. He's stalling."

Evelyn stepped back, her voice turning completely devoid of emotion. "Kill him. Find the boy later."

Marcus raised the gun.

David didn't flinch. He just smiled. A cold, terrifying smile that matched her own.

"You're right about one thing, Evelyn," David said. "I am the architect of my own home."

David snapped his fingers.
