Chapter 19 - The Fall of the QueenEvelyn backed away from the door, her breath coming in short, ragged gasps.

"FBI! WE HAVE A WARRANT! BREACHING IN THREE!"
She spun around, sprinting for the balcony. If she could reach the fire escape, maybe she could slip into the alleyway. Maybe she could pawn her jewelry. She just needed a head start.
The heavy door exploded inward, splintering off its hinges as a tactical battering ram shattered the lock. A dozen heavily armed federal agents swarmed into the penthouse, their laser sights cutting through the luxurious darkness.
Evelyn threw open the balcony doors, stepping out into the freezing rain.
She looked over the edge. There was no fire escape. Just a straight, lethal drop to the bustling city streets fifty stories below.
She was trapped.
"Evelyn Thorne! Put your hands on your head and turn around!" the lead agent barked, aiming his rifle directly at her chest.
She slowly turned around. Her perfect blonde hair was ruined by the rain, plastering against her pale, terrified face. The silk robe clung to her shivering body. The illusion of Claire Miller, the perfect, wealthy wife, was completely dead.
As the agents moved in to slap the heavy steel cuffs on her wrists, a tall figure stepped out from the shadows of the hallway, walking past the tactical team.
It was David.
He was flanked by the Special Agent in Charge, a man who now looked at David not as a suspect, but as the man who had just handed them the biggest financial crime and murder bust of the decade.
Evelyn stared at him, her eyes wide with a mixture of absolute hatred and utter disbelief.
"You..." she hissed, spitting the word like venom. "You stole my money."
"No," David said calmly, stopping a few feet away from her. "I just returned it to the people you stole it from."
"I will kill you!" she screamed, thrashing against the agents holding her. "I will hire a hundred men to find you and that pathetic little boy! You hear me?!"
"With what money, Evelyn?" David asked softly. "Arthur Sterling dropped you. Elias is in federal custody with a shattered spine, singing like a bird for a plea deal. You have nothing."
Evelyn stopped thrashing. The truth hit her with the force of a falling anvil.
She was entirely alone.
"Why?" she whispered, tears of defeat finally spilling down her cheeks. "You had nothing. You were a bankrupt loser. How did you beat me?"
David looked at her. He didn't feel rage anymore. He didn't feel fear. Looking at her now, all he felt was pity for the empty, soulless creature standing before him.
"Because you fight for money, Evelyn," David said, his voice carrying the quiet, unstoppable strength of a father's love. "I fought for my son. You never stood a chance."
David turned his back on her.

He walked out of the penthouse, listening to her agonizing, desperate screams echo down the hallway as the agents dragged her away to a cage she would never, ever leave.
The war was over.
