Chapter 11: The Smear Campaign

As the highly anticipated trial date loomed closer, the Sterling PR machine went into overdrive, crossing the line from slander to outright intimidation. Ruthless paparazzi hounded Elara’s friends, family, and even her former elementary school teachers, offering huge cash payouts for any fabricated dirt or embarrassing anecdotes. Threatening letters, composed of cut-out magazine letters to avoid handwriting analysis, were slipped under the safehouse door, despite the heavy federal security perimeter.

The psychological warfare reached a terrifying boiling point one evening when a heavy cobblestone brick was thrown through Maya’s second-story apartment window. It shattered the glass all over her computer desk, carrying a menacing note wrapped tightly around it with a rubber band: Drop the charges or both of you disappear. This is your only warning.

Instead of cowering in fear or begging the DA to drop the case, Elara took a page directly out of her own modern playbook. She took to social media. Sitting in the drab safehouse living room, completely devoid of makeup and wearing a plain, oversized sweater, she went live to her newly acquired thirty million followers. She looked directly, unflinchingly into the camera lens.

"You can throw bricks through my family's windows. You can print disgusting lies in your bought-and-paid-for magazines. But you cannot change the truth, and you cannot scare me back into silence," she stated, her voice iron-clad. "I will see you in court, Julian." The internet exploded in a wave of fierce support, and overnight, the media officially dubbed her "The Iron Lady of New York."
