Chapter 3: Sirens in the Distance
Through the thick, soundproofed floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse ballroom, the faint, wailing sound of police sirens began to rise from the city streets below. It started as a distant, mournful hum and quickly grew into a deafening cacophony. Flashing red and blue lights reflected off the glass, painting the terrified, pale faces of the captive elite in eerie, strobe-like colors.
Elara looked down at Julian, who was writhing furiously beneath the combined weight of the two investigators, his custom-made suit tearing at the seams. The blood on her face was beginning to dry, tightening her skin uncomfortably. The massive spike of pure adrenaline that had fueled her through the terrifying execution of this night was rapidly fading, giving way to an agonizing, bone-deep physical pain that made her knees tremble. She forced herself to lock her joints, refusing to fall in front of him.

"You're dead, Elara! Do you hear me? You are a dead woman walking!" Julian spat, thrashing his head from side to side. Blood pooled in his mouth from where his pristine face had impacted the hard floor, dripping onto his white shirt. "My father will destroy you. You think a little livestream changes who runs this city? We own the police. We own the judges. I’ll be out by midnight!"
"It’s not a little livestream, Julian," she said, her voice eerily steady despite her shaking hands. She glanced up at the massive projection above them. "It’s twelve million viewers. And climbing every second. Your family has all the money in the world, but they can't buy silence when the whole globe has already heard you confess. The internet doesn't take your bribes."
