Chapter 5: Awakening

Chapter 5: Awakening

Elara woke slowly, dragging herself out of a heavy, drug-induced sleep. Her senses were immediately assaulted by the harsh, sterile smell of bleach and antiseptic, and the glaring fluorescent lights of a private hospital room. The rhythmic, steady beeping of a heart monitor was the only sound in the quiet space, a comforting reminder that she was still alive. As her eyes adjusted, she felt the dull, heavy throb of intravenous painkillers masking the sharp agony in her fractured ribs.

Sitting in an uncomfortable, stiff plastic chair beside her bed, typing furiously on a sticker-covered laptop, was Maya.

"You're awake," Maya said, her head snapping up so fast her glasses nearly flew off. She slammed the laptop shut and rushed to the bedside, grasping Elara's bruised hand with extreme gentleness. Dark circles framed Maya's eyes, and dried tears streaked her cheeks. "You absolute maniac. You actually did it. I thought my heart was going to explode in that van when his security team started sweeping the halls."

"Julian?" Elara croaked, her throat feeling like it was lined with shattered glass.

"Denied bail," Maya grinned fiercely, a feral expression of triumph lighting up her exhausted face. She poured a cup of ice water and carefully held the straw to Elara's chapped lips. "Maximum security hold. He’s a flight risk with limitless resources, private jets, and offshore accounts, and the judge wasn't having a bar of it. Plus, the public outrage is unprecedented; there are literally thousands of people protesting outside the precinct right now. The DA had no choice but to throw the entire library at him. Attempted murder, false imprisonment, corporate fraud—they’re auditing his entire life now."
