Chapter 12: The Trial Begins

On the brisk autumn morning of the trial, the Manhattan courthouse looked less like a legal institution and more like an active war zone. It was surrounded by a chaotic, roaring sea of news vans, thousands of chanting protesters holding massive signs of support for Elara, and rows of heavy, interlocking police barricades.

Elara arrived in a heavily armored, black bulletproof SUV, flanked by four towering US Marshals. She stepped out into the flashing barrage of cameras wearing a sharp, impeccably tailored slate-gray suit. It was a stark, intentional, psychological contrast to the vulnerable, bleeding, terrified woman in the black dress the world had seen months ago. Today, she wore armor.

Inside the grand, wood-paneled courtroom, the air was thick and heavy with the suffocating, electric tension of a historic moment. Julian sat at the defense table, flanked by three of the most expensive, ruthless defense lawyers money could buy. But he looked completely different. He was pale, alarmingly thin, and his golden-boy charm was entirely eroded by weeks of sleepless nights and horrible food in a maximum-security holding cell.

When Elara walked down the center aisle, the murmuring room fell dead silent. Their eyes met across the vast expanse of the room. She held his gaze with cold, absolute authority, her chin raised high. After three agonizingly long seconds, Julian swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing, and looked down at his trembling hands.
