Chapter 1: The Iron Cage

The silence in the Hawthorne Museum was absolute, broken only by the synchronized hum of the reinforced steel shutters locking into place.

Grant Holloway stared at the shattered glass of his bourbon tumbler, the golden liquid pooling around his patent leather shoes. He looked up, his eyes darting from the heavily armed private security forces to the impassive face of Mara Vale.

"You can't do this," Grant sneered, though his voice lacked its usual venom. "This is kidnapping, Mara. My father will have you in federal prison by morning."

"Your father," Mara said, her voice echoing perfectly off the vaulted ceilings, "is currently being locked out of his own offshore bank accounts. But we’ll get to him later."

Panic rippled through the crowd. Senator Vance, a man whose campaigns had been entirely funded by the Holloway empire, pulled his phone from his tuxedo pocket. He tapped the screen frantically.

"No signal," the Senator gasped. "There's no cellular service."

"The museum's architecture includes a military-grade Faraday cage," Mara explained, pacing slowly around the perimeter of the trapped elite. "Designed to prevent electronic interference with climate-controlled vaults. Tonight, it serves a different purpose. It prevents any of you from coordinating your lies."

A woman in a diamond-encrusted gown—the wife of a prominent judge—stepped forward. "Ms. Vale, please. We didn't do anything! We just saw him hit you, that's all!"

"Exactly," Mara snapped, stopping dead in her tracks. "You saw. And you did nothing. You are the enablers of a monster because his money kept your status secure. But the rules of this city changed the moment that steel hit the floor."

Grant lunged forward, his fists clenched, but two security officers were on him in a fraction of a second. They didn't strike him. They simply grabbed his arms and forced him to his knees on the cold marble floor.

"Get your hands off me!" Grant screamed.

Mara looked down at him. "Save your breath, Grant. We have a long night ahead of us."
