Chapter 7: The Breaking Point

Chapter 7: The Breaking Point
An hour passed. The main gallery was a quiet zone of defeat. The powerful guests sat on the floor, their heads in their hands, their reputations incinerated on live television.
Mara stood by the vault door. She pressed the intercom button.
"How are we doing, Grant?"
Only the sound of heavy, shivering breathing came through the speaker.
"I've got time," Mara reminded him. "I own the building."
"Okay!" The voice was weak, cracked, and desperate. "Okay! I'll tell you! Just let me out!"
Mara signaled her guards. The heavy door hissed open. Grant stumbled out, his lips blue, his body shaking violently. He collapsed onto the marble floor, coughing.
Mara handed him a heavy wool blanket. He snatched it, wrapping it tightly around his shoulders.
"The camera is waiting," Mara said, pointing down the hall to the main gallery.
Grant didn't fight back. The arrogance had been frozen out of him. He walked slowly back to the center of the room, standing beneath the red light of the recording camera.
With tears streaming down his face, Grant Holloway outlined the entirety of his family's criminal enterprise. He named names. He provided account numbers. He confessed to ordering hits, bribing judges, and laundering money.
And finally, he looked into the lens and confessed to assaulting Mara Vale.
"I did it," he sobbed. "I hit her because I thought I could get away with it. Because I always get away with it."

Mara stood off-camera, watching the final nail driven into the Holloway coffin.
"Not this time," she whispered.
