Chapter 8: The Federal Hammer
At exactly 4:00 AM, Mara's earpiece crackled.
"Ms. Vale, we have a convoy approaching. Black SUVs. It's the FBI, accompanied by the US Attorney."
Mara smiled. "Let them in."
She walked over to the main security console and typed in a twelve-digit override code.
With a deafening groan, the massive steel shutters covering the front entrance began to rise. The blinding red and blue lights of dozens of law enforcement vehicles flooded the museum's atrium, casting wild shadows over the ancient statues.
Dozens of heavily armed federal agents swarmed into the building, their weapons lowered but ready. A man in a sharp trench coat walked in behind them.
"Mara Vale?" he asked.
"That's me, Agent Thomas," Mara replied calmly.
"You've caused quite a stir tonight," the agent said, looking around at the trembling elite of the city, many of whom were already holding their hands out to be cuffed.
"I preserved a crime scene," Mara corrected. "And I secured multiple confessions regarding federal racketeering, assault, and financial fraud. The evidence is on these encrypted drives."
She handed him a sleek silver flash drive.
"What about him?" Agent Thomas asked, pointing to Grant, who was sitting on the floor, staring blankly at the wall.

"He's all yours," Mara said. "I hear his father was arrested an hour ago at his estate."
"He was," Thomas confirmed. "Thanks to your broadcast. The judge couldn't sign the warrant fast enough."
