Chapter 10 - The Drive He Wanted Gone.

Lena would not send the copied business drive electronically because she no longer trusted company email, cloud links, or even the laptop Grant had assigned her.
She brought the small encrypted drive to Nina's office in a plain envelope and placed it on the conference table like something that could explode socially even if it could not explode physically.
"I copied this before the deletion order went out."
Nina did not touch it immediately.
"Does it contain client information?"
"Yes."
"Employee information?"
"Some."
"Then we handle it carefully."
Claire sat beside Maya and tried not to stare at the envelope.
"What is on it that Grant wants gone?"
Lena exhaled.
"Project files, internal budgets, lender packages, and a folder called HOLLOWAY."
The name landed with familiar force.
Nina arranged for a forensic professional to preserve the drive and identify material relevant to Claire's financial claims without unnecessarily exposing unrelated client data.
Claire appreciated the caution because Grant had already accused her of stealing company information, and she refused to give him a real version of that accusation.
Two days later, Nina received a preliminary summary.
The Holloway folder contained invoices from a consulting company that had no employees, no active website, and no work product attached to its payments.
Money entered Holloway from Dawson Residential Group, then moved through several accounts before some of it returned as personal payments toward Grant's credit cards, car loan, and private investment losses.
Claire read the summary twice.
"He used the company as a funnel."
Nina nodded.
"That is one possible interpretation, and it will need professional analysis."
The folder also contained scanned versions of Claire's signature.
One was the clean image she remembered sending Grant for her design forms.
Another was labeled CLAIRE_AUTH_FINAL.
The metadata showed it had been created two days before the home equity document Claire supposedly signed.
Maya leaned back in her chair.
"That is not a misunderstanding."
Claire could not answer.
She felt grief in a form she had not expected, because every new piece of evidence proved she had not imagined the control, yet every proof also destroyed another memory she had wanted to keep.
Grant had once surprised her with a weekend at the coast shortly after that February loan date.
Claire remembered thinking he was finally making time for them.
Now she wondered whether the trip had been arranged simply to keep her away from the house while documents moved through electronic approval.
The drive contained one more folder that mattered.
It was named FAMILY.
Inside were scanned copies of Claire's passport, birth certificate, driver's license, signature samples, social security documents, therapy notes, old medical bills, preschool forms, and screenshots of private text messages between Claire and Maya.
Claire's face went hot.
"How did he get my texts?"
Lena shook her head.
"I don't know."
Nina looked at the file dates.
Some screenshots had been created from backups connected to the Dawson household tablet, a device Claire had forgotten was linked to her messaging account years earlier.
The pattern was clear.
Grant had been collecting material long before the birthday.
Not all of it was incriminating.
Most of it was painfully ordinary.
That made the collection more disturbing, because it suggested he had not been searching for one emergency.
He had been building options.
"Why would he keep all this?"
Maya asked the question softly.
Claire answered before Nina could.
"Because anything can look bad if you wait for the right moment to show only part of it."
The folder included a document titled TIMELINE C.
It listed dates from the previous eighteen months beside short descriptions of Claire's behavior.
CLAIRE CRIED AFTER CLIENT CANCELED.
CLAIRE LEFT HOUSE AFTER ARGUMENT.
CLAIRE SAID SHE WAS DONE.
CLAIRE SPENT 412 AT HOTEL.
Claire remembered every entry.
She cried after losing a major contract.
She drove around for forty minutes after Grant shouted at her in the kitchen.
She said she was done arguing, not done with her family.
The hotel charge was for fabric samples and a site consultation at a downtown property.
Grant had removed context even before he needed to use the notes.
At the bottom of the document, one line had been added three weeks before Lily's birthday.
TARGET: CONTROLLED PUBLIC INCIDENT WITH WITNESSES.
Nobody spoke.
Claire read it again because her mind refused to accept the words.
"What does that mean?"
Lena covered her mouth.
Nina's expression became very still.
"We do not speculate beyond the document."
"It says public incident."
"Yes."
"Three weeks before the party."
"Yes."
Claire pushed her chair back and walked to the window.
The city below looked bright and distant.
She thought of the canceled photographer, the declined bakery card, the missing preschool money, the way Grant accused her of embarrassing him in front of everyone, and the calm expression he wore immediately after the cake collapsed.
The scene had been a trap, but even now Claire could not know whether Grant intended the exact physical humiliation that happened or merely wanted an argument he could later frame.
That uncertainty did not comfort her.
It made the planning feel colder.
Nina asked Lena whether she had ever seen the timeline document before.
"No."
"Who created it?"
"The author field says GD."
"Could someone else have used his account?"
"Technically, yes."
Nina nodded.
"Then we prove what we can prove."
Claire turned from the window.
"He planned to make me look unstable."
"The document strongly suggests someone using his account was preparing for a public incident."
Claire understood the attorney's caution, but inside her the truth had already become simpler.
Grant had not lost control at Lily's birthday.
He had used control until the moment control became visible.
That evening, Claire received a message from Adrian Cole, Grant's business partner and the man visible in Owen's full video.
I NEED TO SPEAK WITH YOU BEFORE GRANT FINDS OUT WHAT LENA COPIED.
Claire forwarded it to Nina.
A second message arrived before anyone responded.
