Chapter 3 - The Missing Thirty Seconds.

By Monday morning, Grant's version of the birthday had traveled farther than Claire's truth, because a twelve-second video clip from the party had appeared in a neighborhood social group with the caption FAMILY MELTDOWN AT FOUR-YEAR-OLD'S PARTY.

The clip began after Claire was already covered in frosting.

It showed her standing abruptly, Lily screaming, Maya stepping between her and Grant, and Grant lifting both hands in what looked like a calming gesture.

It did not show his grip on Claire.

It did not show the argument about Lily's preschool money.

It did not show the moment Claire was forced forward into the cake.

The missing thirty seconds changed everything.

Comments multiplied beneath the video before Claire even knew it existed, with strangers calling the scene sad, chaotic, embarrassing, and proof that somebody should think about the child.

Nobody in the comments knew which somebody they meant.

Maya found the clip first and showed Claire only after taking Lily into the living room with a bowl of cereal and a cartoon turned louder than usual.

Claire watched the video once.

Then she watched it again without sound.

"Who posted it?"

"An account named BriarLaneMom."

"Do we know her?"

"The account was created yesterday."

Claire stared at the screen.

"Grant."

"Maybe."

"He would never use his own name."

Maya nodded.

"That is why I said maybe."

The comments were the part Claire could not stop reading, even though each one made her feel smaller.

One person wrote that Grant looked remarkably calm.

Another asked whether Claire had been drinking.

A third claimed they had heard she had been struggling for months, although Claire did not recognize the name.

Then she found a comment from Judith Dawson.

PLEASE REMEMBER THERE IS A CHILD INVOLVED AND A FAMILY TRYING TO HANDLE A PRIVATE MEDICAL MATTER WITH COMPASSION.

Claire's breath stopped.

"Medical matter?"

Maya took the phone from her.

"She is planting something."

Claire suddenly remembered Grant's use of the word spiral and understood that he and Judith were building a story with repeated language, each vague piece designed to support the next.

Her phone buzzed with a message from Owen Pierce.

I HAVE SOMETHING, BUT I DON'T WANT TROUBLE.

Claire typed back immediately.

WHAT DO YOU HAVE?

The typing indicator appeared, vanished, and appeared again.

A minute passed.

Then five.

Finally Owen replied.

I WAS RECORDING LILY WITH THE CAKE BEFORE THE ARGUMENT.

Claire's heartbeat quickened.

DID YOU GET WHAT HAPPENED?

Another long pause followed.

MOST OF IT.

Claire stood so quickly that the chair legs scraped the floor.

Maya looked toward the living room to make sure Lily had not noticed.

"Call him."

Claire did.

Owen answered on the fourth ring and spoke in a low voice that made it sound as if someone were standing beside him.

"Claire, I am sorry."

"Do you have the full video?"

"I did."

The past tense landed like a stone.

"What does that mean?"

Owen sighed.

"Grant came over last night."

Claire gripped the phone.

"Why?"

"He knew I had been recording because he saw me after you went inside."

"What did he say?"

"He said there was a family situation, he said lawyers were already involved, and he said sharing a video of Lily without permission could create problems for everybody."

Maya mouthed the word intimidation.

"Did you delete it?"

"He watched me delete it from my phone."

Claire closed her eyes.

"Owen."

"I know."

"Please tell me there is a backup."

Silence filled the call.

Then Owen whispered.

"My phone uploads videos automatically."

Claire opened her eyes.

"So it exists?"

"Maybe."

"Can you check?"

"Not from here."

"Where are you?"

"At work."

Claire heard a door close on his side of the call.

"Listen, Grant also asked whether I heard you threaten to take Lily away forever."

"I never said that."

"I know."

"Did you tell him that?"

Owen hesitated.

"I told him I didn't remember."

The answer disappointed Claire, but she also heard the fear in it.

Grant did not need every witness to lie.

He only needed enough of them to become uncertain.

"Please check the cloud backup tonight."

"I will."

"And Owen?"

"Yeah?"

"Do not tell Grant you checked."

The request sounded strange in Claire's own voice, because three days earlier Grant had been her husband and Owen had been simply the neighbor who borrowed their ladder every spring.

Now she was speaking as if they were all standing on different sides of an invisible line.

At noon, an envelope arrived by courier at Maya's townhouse.

Claire's name was printed on the front.

Inside was a letter from an attorney representing Grant, accusing Claire of withholding Lily, causing a public disturbance, and creating instability in the child's routine.

The letter requested Lily's immediate return to the marital home and proposed that Claire stay elsewhere while she addressed her alleged emotional condition.

Maya read it twice.

"This was prepared fast."

Claire looked at the date.

The letter had been drafted on Saturday night, less than six hours after the birthday party.

"He didn't start planning after I left."

Maya looked up.

Claire felt cold despite the warm kitchen.

"He was ready."

The possibility changed the shape of the entire party.

Maybe the missing money had not started the confrontation by accident.

Maybe Grant had wanted her angry in front of witnesses.

Claire thought of the canceled photographer, the declined card at the bakery, Judith's strange comments, and the way Grant had moved between Claire and the kitchen door after the cake was ruined.

The scene suddenly felt less like a loss of control and more like a stage with badly hidden marks on the floor.

At six that evening, Owen called again.

His voice was shaking.

"The backup is there."

Claire pressed the phone to her ear.

"Send it."

"I can't."

"Why not?"

"Because someone logged into my cloud account this afternoon and changed the password."

Claire stopped speaking.

May you like

Owen continued in a whisper.

"And Claire, the recovery email now belongs to Grant's company domain."
