Chapter 5 - The Ledger Under the Sink.

For two full seconds, nobody moved in the kitchen, because the small black ledger in Claire's hand seemed to change the air more completely than any shouted accusation could have.
Grant recovered first.
"Put that down."
Claire looked at the book, then at him.
"What is it?"
"It is not yours."
Maya immediately raised her phone higher.
"Then whose is it?"
Grant ignored her and stepped toward Claire.
Claire stepped back.
"Do not touch me."
The words stopped him in the middle of the kitchen.
Maya's camera continued recording.
Grant forced his hands to his sides.
"Claire, that contains confidential business information."
"Why is confidential business information hidden under our sink?"
"Because I brought work home."
"In a plastic bag?"
"You do not understand what you are looking at."
Claire opened the ledger.
The first pages contained dates, initials, and numbers written in Grant's compact handwriting, with arrows connecting account names Claire did not recognize.
Near the middle, one line made her vision narrow.
LILY D. EDUCATION - 18,500.
Beside it was an arrow pointing to an abbreviation that appeared six times throughout the book.
HOLLOWAY VENTURES.
Claire looked up.
"You took money from Lily's account."
Grant's face remained still.
"It was temporary."
Maya made a sound of disbelief.
"You just said she did not understand it."
Grant looked at Claire instead.
"The account was sitting there while we had short-term cash flow needs."
"That money came from my mother's estate."
"And it belongs to our family."
"It belongs to Lily."
"You are making a technical distinction because you are angry."
Claire almost laughed at the phrase technical distinction, because Grant had always used formal language when ordinary words would make him sound cruel.
She turned another page.
There were transfers from the household account, the tax reserve, and a line marked C.D. DESIGN that matched the name of Claire's freelance business.
"You moved my client payments too."
"I consolidated accounts."
"Without telling me."
"You asked me to handle finances."
"I asked you to pay the bills."
"Same difference."
Claire closed the ledger.
"No."
Her voice was quiet enough that Grant leaned forward slightly to hear her.
"It is not the same difference."
The unknown number sent another message.
TAKE PHOTOS, NOT THE BOOK.
Claire's heart kicked.
She did not know who was guiding her, but the advice made immediate sense, because if the ledger truly contained business information, Grant could accuse her of taking company property.
She handed the book to Maya.
"Photograph every page."
Grant moved forward.
"Absolutely not."
Maya stepped behind the kitchen island.
"Stay there."
Grant's eyes darkened.
"You are both making a very serious mistake."
Claire watched him and understood that the ledger frightened him far more than the ruined birthday video.
"Then explain Holloway Ventures."
Grant said nothing.
Maya began photographing the pages one by one.
"Who is Holloway?"
"A vendor."
"For what?"
"Consulting."
"What kind?"
"This conversation is over."
Claire's phone buzzed again.
CHECK PAGE 47.
She took the ledger from Maya and flipped quickly until she found the handwritten number in the corner.
Page forty-seven contained only four lines.
HOUSE EQUITY DRAW - 92,000.
H.V. - 75,000.
J.D. - 10,000.
C.D. SIGNATURE COMPLETE.
Claire read the final line three times.
"What does C.D. signature complete mean?"
Grant's throat moved.
"I don't know."
"Those are my initials."
"Lots of people have those initials."
Maya stared at him.
"In your personal ledger under a line about your house?"
Claire looked at Grant.
"Did you borrow against the house?"
He did not answer.
"Did you sign my name?"
"Be careful what you accuse me of."
The sentence confirmed more than a denial would have.
Claire felt suddenly light-headed.
The house had been the one piece of their marriage she believed could not be moved without her knowledge, because both names were on the deed and every major decision supposedly required both signatures.
"How much do we owe?"
Grant looked toward the window.
"It is managed."
"How much?"
"You do not need to worry about it."
"Ninety-two thousand dollars is written in front of me."
"That is not the current balance."
"What is the current balance?"
Grant's silence answered again.
Maya finished photographing the last page and set the ledger on the counter.
Claire returned it to the plastic bag and placed it exactly where she had found it beneath the sink.
Grant watched every movement.
"Who told you to look there?"
Claire picked up her bag.
"Why does that matter?"
"Because someone is interfering in my business."
"Your business seems to be interfering in my life."
They walked toward the front door.
Grant followed.
"Claire."
She stopped but did not turn.
"Bring Lily home tonight, and I will explain the accounts."
Claire slowly faced him.
"You are bargaining with our daughter."
"I am trying to restore stability."
"You are trying to restore control."
His eyes went flat.
"You think Maya's couch is a life plan?"
Claire flinched, not because the insult was clever, but because it touched the exact fear she had been trying not to name.
Grant saw the reaction and continued.
"You have no car, limited income, frozen cards, and no access to this house unless I allow it."
Maya stepped forward, but Claire lifted one hand to stop her.
Grant lowered his voice.
"Come home, apologize for the scene, tell people you were overwhelmed, and all of this ends."
Claire looked at the man she had once trusted enough to combine bank accounts with, buy a house with, and place beside her in every photograph of Lily's life.
"And the money?"
"I said I will explain it."
"The altered account access?"
"Security measures."
"The changed locks?"
"Temporary."
"My passport?"
"Safe."
"The cake?"
Grant's gaze hardened.
"Your behavior caused that."
Claire nodded once.
That answer made the decision for her.
"Goodbye, Grant."
Outside, she and Maya walked to the car without speaking until the front door closed behind them.
Only then did Claire open the latest message from the unknown number.
YOU SAW THE LEDGER, SO NOW YOU KNOW HE IS LYING ABOUT MORE THAN THE PARTY.
Claire typed with shaking fingers.
WHO ARE YOU?
The reply came almost immediately.
