Chapter 6 - The Woman Who Kept the Books.

Lena Holt chose a coffee shop forty minutes away from Claire's neighborhood and arrived wearing dark sunglasses even though the afternoon had turned cloudy.

She was in her late thirties, sharply dressed, visibly exhausted, and so careful about where she sat that Claire immediately understood fear had brought her there before courage did.

Maya took the table nearest the door while Claire sat across from Lena with her phone face down between them.

"Why did you text me?"

Lena wrapped both hands around a paper cup she had not touched.

"Because I watched Grant move money for nine months, and I kept telling myself it was messy business accounting until he started moving yours."

Claire's stomach tightened.

"How much?"

"I do not know the final number."

"You keep his books."

"I keep the books he lets me see."

The distinction sounded painfully familiar.

Lena explained that Grant's company, Dawson Residential Group, had begun losing money after two large renovation contracts collapsed the previous winter, but Grant concealed the losses from vendors, lenders, and even his business partner Adrian Cole.

Instead of admitting the company was short on cash, Grant created a pattern of temporary transfers, moving money between accounts so balances looked healthy whenever someone important was looking.

"Holloway Ventures is not a vendor," Lena said.

Claire leaned forward.

"What is it?"

"A company registered through a filing service."

"Who owns it?"

Lena looked directly at her.

"Grant controls it."

Claire heard the coffee grinder behind the counter, a spoon hitting ceramic, and a child laughing near the window, but all of those normal sounds seemed impossibly distant.

"He told me it was consulting."

"That is what the invoices say."

"And what do the invoices pay for?"

"Nothing I could verify."

Maya pulled out the photographs from the ledger and showed Lena page forty-seven.

The color drained from Lena's face.

"Where did you get this?"

"Our kitchen."

Lena stared at the photograph marked C.D. SIGNATURE COMPLETE.

"Claire, did you sign a home equity authorization in February?"

"No."

"Did you sign anything through an electronic closing service?"

"No."

Lena closed her eyes briefly.

"Then he used the scanned signature from your design contract."

Claire's hands went cold.

Months earlier, Grant had offered to help Claire convert her paper client forms into electronic templates, and she had sent him a clean image of her signature so he could place it on invoices and estimates.

The convenience she had barely remembered now felt like a door she had unknowingly left open.

"Can you prove that?"

Lena hesitated.

"I can prove he asked me to attach a signature file to documents."

"Did you do it?"

"Once."

The answer hung between them.

Lena's voice dropped.

"He told me you had approved the loan and were traveling with Lily, so he needed the file placed before a deadline."

Claire stared at her.

"You used my signature."

"I did."

Maya shifted in her chair.

Lena looked close to tears, but Claire felt too shocked to offer comfort.

"Why are you telling me now?"

"Because on Friday Grant asked me to build a file showing that you had been draining household accounts."

Claire stopped breathing.

"Friday was before the party."

"Yes."

The word confirmed Claire's worst suspicion from the attorney letter.

The birthday scene had not created Grant's plan.

It had been placed inside one.

"What exactly did he ask you to do?"

"He wanted transfers from your design business labeled as personal withdrawals, even though most of them paid household vendors."

"Did you change them?"

"No."

"Did he know you refused?"

"He knows I delayed."

Lena finally took a sip of coffee and grimaced because it had gone cold.

"After the party, he called me at midnight and said Claire had become unstable, that lawyers were involved, and that I needed to secure records before she tried to steal company files."

"He knew I would find the ledger."

"Maybe not."

"Then why hide it under the sink?"

Lena's expression changed.

"Grant did not hide that ledger there."

Claire looked at her sharply.

"You did?"

"No."

"Then who?"

"I don't know."

A new uneasiness entered the conversation.

Claire had assumed Lena sent the first message because Lena had placed the book where it could be found, but Lena insisted she had never entered the Dawson house without Grant present.

"Someone else wants you to see what he is doing," Maya said.

Lena nodded slowly.

"And that person knows his private records."

Claire thought of Adrian Cole, Grant's business partner, then Judith, then Owen, and finally people whose names she had never heard because Grant's financial world had always been kept separate from hers.

"What do I do with the photographs?"

Lena looked at Claire for a long moment.

"You protect them."

"From what?"

"From disappearing."

Lena reached into her bag and removed a small envelope.

Inside were printed copies of six internal emails, three account summaries, and a schedule of transfers from Lily's education account into Holloway Ventures.

Claire saw her daughter's name repeated beside numbers and dates, and the anger she felt was cleaner than fear.

"He used her account five times."

"Seven."

Claire looked up.

"The last two transfers were reversed before month-end, so they disappear from the simple summary."

Maya stared at Lena.

"How much total moved through it?"

"Just over eighty thousand dollars."

Claire pressed both hands flat against the table.

The account had never held eighty thousand at once, which meant Grant had repeatedly emptied and refilled it to make his company look solvent.

"He risked Lily's entire fund."

"Yes."

The word had barely left Lena's mouth when Claire's phone began ringing.

The caller ID showed MAYFIELD FAMILY SERVICES.

Claire answered.

A calm woman identified herself and explained that Grant had submitted an emergency request alleging Claire was withholding Lily and experiencing dangerous emotional instability.

Claire looked across the table at Lena, who had just admitted Grant began preparing financial evidence against Claire before the birthday.

The caller continued speaking about an assessment appointment and an upcoming temporary custody hearing.

Claire heard only one sentence clearly.

"Mr. Dawson says he has video supporting his concerns."
