Vanessa, after cooperating fully with investigators, received a reduced sentence.
Every employee Margaret had framed had their convictions erased.
Each received financial compensation from the estate.
Outside the courthouse, Clara stood holding Ethan's and Evan's hands.
The boys were smiling again.
Not the frightened smiles of children hoping everything would be okay.
Real smiles.
The kind children wear when they finally feel safe.
Adrian walked over carrying two small backpacks.
"Ready for your first day at your new school?" he asked.

Months earlier, she had walked toward those same steps wearing handcuffs, believing her life was over.
