Chapter 10 - Daniel Mercer.

The name followed Claire into the early hours of Friday like a second shadow.
Daniel Mercer.
She said it once out loud in Elena's conference room and disliked how unfamiliar it sounded.
For nine years, she had introduced him as Daniel Bennett.
He had taken her surname after their marriage, saying he admired what the Bennett name represented.
Claire had found it romantic.
Now she wondered whether he had been laundering more than a name.
Owen obtained the Samuel Price file at two in the morning through the estate custodian's secure portal.
The report was eighty-seven pages.
Charles had hired Samuel four months before Claire and Daniel became engaged.
The investigation began with a routine background check.
It ended with a warning.
Daniel Mercer had been a junior partner in a Phoenix development syndicate in 2008.
The project collapsed after investor funds were moved through a consulting company whose records later vanished.
No criminal charge was filed against Daniel.
He told investigators he had been young, uninformed, and used by senior partners.
But Samuel found something the civil case had missed.
The consulting company was controlled by Daniel's uncle.
Payments from the project had funded Daniel's graduate tuition and a condominium purchase.
Charles had confronted Daniel privately.
Samuel's notes described the meeting.
SUBJECT DENIED KNOWLEDGE.
WHEN SHOWN PAYMENT RECORDS, SUBJECT REQUESTED THAT MATTER REMAIN PRIVATE FROM C.B.
OFFERED TO REPAY INDIRECT BENEFIT.
Charles refused the money.
Three weeks later, Harbor Consulting received two hundred thousand dollars from a company tied to Daniel.
Samuel interpreted the transfer as an attempted payoff and returned it.
The money later moved back through two intermediate accounts.
Claire stared at the report.
"So the spreadsheet didn't show my father paying him."
Elena shook her head.
"It shows Daniel trying to buy silence."
Claire turned the page.
The final section hurt more.
Charles instructed Samuel to deliver a sealed warning packet directly to Claire before the wedding.
Samuel documented three failed delivery attempts.
On the fourth, a man identifying himself as Claire's fiancé signed for it at her former apartment.
Daniel.
Claire closed the file.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
"He took it," she said.
Owen nodded.
"Looks that way."
"And then he married me three months later."
Elena's voice was quiet.
"Yes."
Claire stood and walked to the window.
She thought about every argument in which Daniel accused her of distrusting him.
Every time he said her father's shadow controlled their marriage.
Every time Claire defended him against people who asked why he had advanced so quickly within Bennett Urban.
Daniel had not feared Charles's judgment.
He had feared Charles's evidence.
At seven, Claire changed into a charcoal suit in Elena's office restroom.
She looked at herself in the mirror.
The mark on her cheek had faded to yellow at the edge.
She left it uncovered.
At eight, they entered the emergency courtroom.
Daniel sat at the opposite table with a new attorney, Caroline Weiss, a respected commercial litigator known for refusing cases she could not control.
Claire wondered how much Daniel had told her.
Thomas Keene sat in the second row.
His presence surprised Claire.
Robert and Marcus sat behind Elena.
The hearing concerned only one question on paper.
Should Northstar's claimed transfer of forty-one percent voting interest be temporarily blocked while authenticity was investigated?
Daniel's side argued the transfer was valid and that Claire was manufacturing a marital dispute to escape an agreement she regretted.
Caroline spoke calmly and avoided discussing the bedroom incident.
She was smarter than Martin.
Elena responded with the forged signature, credential misuse, archive footage, and storage unit evidence.
The judge, Evelyn Ward, listened without interruption.
Then she asked Daniel's attorney one question.
"Do you have any witness who saw Ms. Bennett sign the controlling-interest consent?"
Caroline glanced at Daniel.
"The document is notarized."
"That was not my question."
Caroline conferred quietly with him.
"We have a notary certification."
Judge Ward looked at Elena.
"Where is the notary?"
Elena stood.
"James Cole is outside the courtroom under subpoena."
Daniel's head turned.
Caroline's expression sharpened.
"Your Honor, we were not notified that Mr. Cole would testify today."
"You are now."
James entered five minutes later.
He looked terrified.
He took the oath.
Elena showed him the consent document.
"Is that your notary stamp?"
"It appears to be."
"Did Claire Bennett sign this in your presence?"
James swallowed.
"No."
The courtroom shifted.
Daniel whispered something to Caroline.
Elena continued.
"Did you notarize this document?"
James looked at Daniel.
Judge Ward spoke sharply.
"Mr. Cole, answer counsel."
"No."
"How did your stamp appear on it?"
James's eyes filled with shame.
"My electronic notary credentials were copied."
"By whom?"
James hesitated.
"Daniel Bennett asked me for temporary access during a transaction last winter."
Daniel's face went rigid.
Caroline closed her eyes briefly.
Elena asked, "Did you give it to him?"
"Yes."
"Did you authorize him to notarize documents in your name?"
"No."
Judge Ward wrote something.
The transfer was frozen within minutes.
Northstar was barred from exercising any voting rights until further order.
Daniel was ordered to preserve all records and credentials.
Claire should have felt relief.
Instead, she watched Thomas Keene leave the courtroom before the judge finished speaking.
Owen followed him.
Ten minutes later, Claire received a message.
Thomas is meeting Daniel in the parking garage.
Elena looked at her phone.
"We don't interfere."
"We observe."
Owen recorded from a lawful distance.
Daniel entered the garage through a side door.
Thomas stood beside a black sedan.
Their conversation was partly captured by Owen's directional microphone.
Thomas sounded angry.
"You said the judge wouldn't hear witnesses today."
Daniel replied, "That changed."
"My loan matures at five."
"Then vote the way you're supposed to at four."
Claire's stomach tightened.
There was another board vote scheduled at four that afternoon, one Daniel had no right to influence after suspension.
Thomas said, "The transfer is frozen."
Daniel answered, "The transfer was Plan A."
Thomas lowered his voice.
"What's Plan B?"
Daniel smiled.
May you like
"Claire won't own enough company by four to matter."
