Chapter 2 - The Message on the Marble.

Daniel moved for the phone.
Claire moved first.
She stepped on the edge of the device with her heel, not hard enough to break it, only enough to stop him from reaching it.
"Who's Martin Keller?"
Daniel remained on the floor for another second.
Then he sat up slowly.
His breathing had steadied.
The panic Claire expected never arrived.
"Move your foot."
"Answer me."
The blonde woman stood near the windows with both hands pressed against her purse.
Her face had gone pale.
Claire looked at her.
"What's your name?"
The woman swallowed.
"Madison."
"Last name?"
"Vale."
Daniel's voice sharpened.
"Madison, don't say another word."
Claire returned her attention to him.
"Interesting."
Daniel got to one knee.
Claire stepped back but kept the phone beyond his reach.
"You hit me in front of a witness," she said.
"And you threw me to the floor."
"After you reached for me again."
Daniel smiled without humor.
"That's one version."
Claire finally understood the confidence in Martin Keller's message.
Get her angry tonight.
Daniel had wanted a confrontation.
He had expected Claire to react wildly to the affair.
He had expected shouting, broken glass, perhaps a shove that could be framed as something worse.
Instead, the cameras had recorded him striking first.
Claire's pulse steadied further.
"You invited her here knowing I'd come home."
Daniel stood.
He adjusted his shirt as though they were still at a business dinner and not standing inside the wreckage of their marriage.
"You came home early."
"You knew my flight changed."
"You texted the driver."
Claire felt another small piece click into place.
The driver was employed by the household management company Daniel had recommended six months earlier.
"You've been tracking my schedule."
Daniel shrugged.
"We're married."
Madison looked from one of them to the other.
"Daniel, you said she already knew about us."
Daniel turned sharply.
"Enough."
Madison flinched.
Claire noticed.
"He told you I knew?"
Madison nodded slowly.
"He said you two had an arrangement."
Daniel stepped toward her.
"Madison."
Claire raised one hand.
"Don't intimidate her."
Daniel laughed.
"You think you're in control because you got lucky once?"
Claire ignored the bait.
She bent, picked up his phone, and held it out of his reach.
"Unlock it."
"No."
"Then leave without it."
"That's my property."
"So is the penthouse."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
Claire turned toward Madison.
"You can leave now."
Madison hesitated.
"I didn't know he was setting you up."
"I believe you didn't know everything."
The distinction landed.
Madison looked away.
Daniel saw it too.
"She's manipulating you."
Claire almost smiled.
"Daniel, you brought your girlfriend into my bedroom as part of a legal trap, and you're accusing me of manipulation."
Madison grabbed her coat from the chair.
Daniel blocked the doorway.
"Nobody leaves until we settle this."
Claire reached into her pocket and held up her own phone.
The screen showed an active call.
Elena Torres had answered twenty seconds earlier.
Daniel stared at it.
Claire spoke clearly.
"Elena, did you hear that?"
Elena's voice came through the speaker.
"I heard enough."
Daniel's face changed for the first time.
"You called a lawyer?"
"I texted mine before I opened the bedroom door."
"Of course you did."
Elena spoke again.
"Claire, do not discuss property, finances, or any proposed agreement tonight."
Daniel looked toward the ceiling.
His gaze searched for cameras.
Claire saw the exact moment he remembered them.
"Are you recording this?"
Claire did not answer.
Elena did.
"Daniel, New York law permits Claire to record a conversation she is participating in."
Daniel swore under his breath.
Madison stepped around him while he was distracted.
"I'm leaving."
Daniel caught her forearm.
"You're staying."
Madison pulled away.
"Don't touch me."
The echo of Claire's earlier words hung in the room.
Daniel released her.
Madison hurried into the hallway.
Before she disappeared, Claire called after her.
"Madison."
She stopped.
"Do you have my number?"
Madison shook her head.
Claire recited it once.
Daniel stared at her.
Madison entered it into her phone.
"If Daniel asks you to delete anything from tonight," Claire said, "don't."
Madison left.
The elevator chimed less than a minute later.
Claire and Daniel stood alone in the bedroom.
The city glittered beyond the windows with obscene normalcy.
Daniel lowered his voice.
"You have no idea what you've just done."
Claire looked at the phone in her hand.
"I think I'm beginning to."
"Give me my phone."
"Not until Elena tells me whether I should preserve it."
"You cannot confiscate my property."
"Then call the police."
Daniel studied her.
Claire could almost hear him recalculating.
He walked to the dresser and picked up his jacket.
"By tomorrow morning, every person on your board will know you attacked me."
Claire touched the faint heat on her cheek.
"The cameras will know otherwise."
"Cameras can be interpreted."
"Not this clearly."
Daniel smiled again, but it was thinner now.
"You still think this is about what happened in this room."
Claire's grip tightened around the phone.
"What is it about?"
Daniel put on his jacket.
"Friday."
Then he walked toward the door.
Claire did not stop him.
At the threshold, he turned.
"You should check the company accounts before breakfast."
He left.
The elevator doors closed behind him.
Claire called Elena back immediately.
"What did he mean?"
"I don't know yet," Elena said.
"But do not log into anything from the penthouse network until we know whether your systems are compromised."
Claire's stomach tightened.
"He knows the company infrastructure."
"Then assume he planned more than one route."
Claire looked at Daniel's phone.
The screen had gone dark.
"I have his phone."
"Power it down and put it somewhere secure."
Claire followed the instruction.
Then she went downstairs to the study and opened the fireproof cabinet where she kept original trust documents.
The top drawer was locked.
The second opened.
The third did not.
Claire frowned.
She used the backup key.
The drawer slid out.
It was empty.
The folder containing the original ownership documents for Bennett Urban Holdings was gone.
In its place sat a single white envelope.
Claire opened it.
Inside was a photocopy of her signature on a document she had never seen.
At the top, in bold letters, were the words CONSENT TO TRANSFER OF CONTROLLING INTEREST.
May you like
The signature looked perfect.
