Chapter 6 - Someone Wearing Her Name.

The outer security system locked automatically after the failed attempt.
Miriam moved faster than anyone expected.
She sealed the inner vault and called building security.
Claire stood beside the archive terminal watching another access request flash across the screen.
CLAIRE BENNETT - AUTHENTICATION FAILED.
Then another.
Then another.
"They're testing a copy," Miriam said.
Elena looked toward the steel door.
"Can they get in?"
"Not without her live biometric match."
Martin asked whether the police had been called.
Miriam gave him a flat look.
"Building security first. Police if needed."
Claire's phone buzzed with a text from Daniel.
Enjoying the family history lesson?
Her skin went cold.
She showed Elena.
Elena immediately photographed the message.
"Do not answer."
Claire typed anyway.
You broke into the archive eight months ago.
Elena gave her a look.
Claire held up one finger.
Daniel's reply arrived within seconds.
Prove it.
Claire showed the screen.
Elena's irritation changed into something closer to approval.
"Fine. Now stop."
The building security manager called Miriam.
A woman had presented Claire's driver's license at the lobby desk and claimed her access card was malfunctioning.
When asked to wait for verification, she left.
Security cameras captured her face.
Miriam pulled up the image.
Claire recognized her immediately.
Madison Vale.
Robert swore.
Martin looked genuinely startled.
Claire called Madison.
No answer.
She called again.
Straight to voicemail.
"She was at the penthouse last night," Claire said.
"Daniel told her I knew about the affair."
Elena folded her arms.
"And now she appears here using your identity."
Claire stared at the still image.
Madison wore a dark wig and oversized glasses, but the bone structure was unmistakable.
"She texted me warnings after she left."
Martin spoke carefully.
"People sometimes warn the person they're deceiving to create credibility."
Claire looked at him.
"You sound experienced."
He ignored the remark.
"Do not assume she is a victim."
For once, Claire agreed with him.
They left the vault through a service exit under security escort.
Outside, reporters waited on the sidewalk.
Claire stopped short.
"How did they know?"
Elena's phone began vibrating with alerts.
A business news site had published a story thirty minutes earlier.
BENNETT URBAN CEO INVOLVED IN DOMESTIC INCIDENT AS CONTROL DISPUTE EMERGES.
The article cited an anonymous source close to Daniel.
It described him as injured.
It described Claire as emotionally volatile.
It made no mention that Daniel had struck her first.
"He moved fast," Elena said.
Claire read the second paragraph.
A source claimed Charles Bennett had left private concerns about his daughter's stability.
Claire looked at Martin.
"Your envelope is already in the press."
Martin's face hardened.
"I did not authorize that."
Robert stepped beside Claire.
"Daniel did."
The reporters noticed them.
Questions erupted.
"Ms. Bennett, did you attack your husband?"
"Is the board removing you?"
"Did your father question your fitness to run the company?"
Claire kept walking.
A camera operator moved backward in front of her.
"Ms. Bennett, are you denying there was a physical confrontation?"
Claire stopped.
Elena murmured her name in warning.
Claire looked directly at the cameras.
"There was a confrontation."
The street quieted just enough.
"My husband struck me."
Another wave of questions exploded.
Claire continued.
"The incident was recorded. My attorneys are preserving the evidence."
She did not mention the forged transfers.
She did not mention the false letter.
She did not mention Madison.
Daniel expected emotion.
Claire gave the press one clean fact.
Then she walked to the car.
By the time she reached the office, the clip was everywhere.
Marcus met her in the elevator lobby.
"The board wants another emergency session."
"When?"
"Four o'clock."
"Good."
"There's more."
Claire looked at him.
"Of course there is."
Marcus handed her a printed audit report.
The cap table vendor had accepted Northstar's transfer because Robert's credentials approved it through an administrative override.
Robert's account had also changed two internal permissions.
One gave Daniel temporary access to executive banking authorization.
The other removed Claire's ability to revoke external share transfers without board approval.
"When were these changes made?"
Marcus pointed to the timestamp.
Eight months ago.
The same day Daniel entered the archive using Robert's credentials.
Elena paced once across Claire's office.
"He didn't just steal records. He built infrastructure."
Claire looked at the Manhattan skyline through the office windows.
"For eight months."
Marcus looked sick.
"Maybe longer."
Claire turned back.
"Find Harbor."
"What?"
"My father called something the Harbor account."
Marcus frowned.
"Bank account?"
"I don't know."
"I'll search legacy ledgers."
Elena asked Claire for Madison's texts.
Claire forwarded screenshots.
Elena read them twice.
"She says Daniel wanted you angry. She says he planned the bedroom scene. Then she impersonates you at the archive."
Claire nodded.
"Two Madisons."
"Or one Madison changing strategy."
Claire's phone rang from an unknown number.
She answered cautiously.
No one spoke.
Then she heard breathing.
"Madison?"
A whisper came through.
"Don't say my name."
Claire put the call on speaker and motioned Elena closer.
"Where are you?"
"I can't tell you."
"You tried to enter my family archive."
Silence.
"I know."
Claire's anger rose.
"Using my identification."
"I know."
"Why?"
Madison began crying softly, then forced herself quiet.
"Because Daniel has my brother."
Claire stared at Elena.
"What does that mean?"
"Not like that," Madison whispered.
"He owns the debt."
"What debt?"
"My brother's company. Daniel bought the loan through Northstar. He said if I didn't help, he'd call it immediately and take everything."
Claire closed her eyes.
"So you helped him forge my identity."
"I helped him get copies. I didn't know what he was doing at first."
"And the bedroom?"
"He said if you reacted badly, the board would remove you."
Elena leaned toward the phone.
"Madison, this is Elena Torres. You need independent counsel."
Madison panicked.
"No. No lawyers."
"Then you're in more danger, not less."
A noise sounded on Madison's end.
A door opening.
Madison inhaled sharply.
"I have to go."
Claire spoke quickly.
"Where is Daniel?"
Madison whispered one final sentence.
"Ask him why Northstar rented a storage unit under your father's name."
May you like
The line went dead.
