Chapter 15 - The Empty Apartment.

Madison's apartment in Chelsea looked as though someone had left in the middle of an ordinary morning.

A mug stood beside the sink.

A hair dryer lay plugged into the bathroom wall.

A pair of sneakers sat by the front door.

Her passport was in a desk drawer.

Her phone was gone.

Owen entered only after Madison's brother Evan reported her missing and police permitted him to assist as a private investigator for the family.

Claire stayed away from the apartment.

Daniel had spent three days trying to cast her as someone who pressured Madison.

Showing up at a missing witness's home would give him a headline before it gave Claire an answer.

Evan came to Elena's office instead.

He was thirty, exhausted, and furious with himself.

Evan handed Claire a second item from Madison's apartment.

It was a cheap spiral notebook found beneath a stack of fashion magazines.

Most pages contained ordinary reminders, grocery lists, and fragments of work schedules.

The final pages changed.

Madison had begun writing dates beside Daniel's requests.

COPY ID - SAID FOR TRAVEL FILE.

GET SAMPLE SIGNATURE - SAID ANNIVERSARY GIFT.

ASK EVAN ABOUT LOAN TERMS.

BEDROOM - MAKE SURE I STAY UNTIL CLAIRE ARRIVES.

Beside that last line Madison had drawn three question marks.

A later entry read HE KEEPS SAYING SHE WILL EXPLODE. WHAT IF SHE DOESN'T?

Claire felt a bitter pressure behind her ribs.

Madison had doubted the plan before the night in the penthouse.

She had still gone through with it.

Evan noticed Claire's expression.

"I know what you're thinking."

"You don't."

"You're thinking she had chances to stop."

Claire looked at him.

"She did."

Evan nodded.

"I know."

He did not defend his sister.

That restraint made Claire listen.

"Daniel made every favor feel temporary," Evan said.

"First he solved a problem. Then he reminded us he solved it. Then the favor became a debt. Then the debt became a rule."

Claire thought of the company, the board, Martin, Thomas, Victor, and herself.

Different relationships.

Same architecture.

Daniel rarely began with a demand large enough to make someone leave.

He began with something that could be explained.

Then he built the next step on the shame of the previous one.

The notebook did not absolve Madison.

It did something more useful.

It showed progression.

Elena photographed every page and gave the original to Madison's attorney for preservation.

"I should've known," he said.

Claire sat across from him.

"Known what?"

"That Daniel wasn't helping us."

Evan explained that his construction company had borrowed heavily after a major client defaulted.

Daniel approached him privately and arranged bridge financing through what Evan believed was an independent lender.

Only later did he learn Northstar had purchased the debt.

Daniel kept extending deadlines in exchange for small favors from Madison.

Dinner invitations.

Introductions.

Copies of information.

Eventually, Daniel asked Madison to help him access Claire's documents.

Evan found out only after the archive incident.

"She called me crying," he said.

"She said she'd done something she couldn't undo."

Claire's anger toward Madison remained, but it no longer fit into a simple shape.

"When did you last speak?"

"Last night at eleven."

"What did she say?"

"That she was meeting her lawyer this morning and telling everything."

"Anything else?"

Evan nodded.

"She said Daniel had a last insurance policy."

Elena looked up.

"Those exact words?"

"Yes."

"Did she explain?"

"No."

Owen called from Madison's apartment.

He found a paper receipt in the trash from a twenty-four-hour print shop.

Madison had printed forty-two pages at one-seventeen Saturday morning.

Security footage showed her leaving with a large envelope.

At one-thirty-two, a street camera captured her entering a rideshare vehicle.

The vehicle dropped her near Grand Central.

From there, the trail ended.

Claire asked Evan whether Madison had relatives outside New York.

Their mother lived in Pennsylvania.

No one had heard from her.

At two in the afternoon, Daniel's publicist released another statement.

It claimed Madison had "withdrawn false accusations after acknowledging outside pressure."

No evidence accompanied the statement.

Claire stared at it.

"He knows she's missing."

Elena nodded.

"Or wants everyone to think she recanted."

Owen traced the publicist's wording to an email received from Daniel at one-forty-seven.

That meant Daniel had issued the claim after Madison disappeared.

At three-ten, Evan received a text from Madison's number.

I'm okay.

Need space.

Don't look for me.

Evan almost cried with relief.

Owen did not.

"Ask her something only she knows."

Evan typed.

What did Dad call the blue car?

The answer came quickly.

Bluebird.

Evan shook his head.

"Wrong."

Their father called the car Betty.

Someone had Madison's phone but not Madison's memory.

Police upgraded the missing-person investigation.

Claire felt the atmosphere change around the case.

Until now, Daniel's campaign had been financial and reputational.

If Madison was being held somewhere against her will, the stakes had crossed a line nobody could spin as marital conflict.

Elena reminded Claire not to speculate publicly.

Claire agreed.

At four-thirty, Martin Keller called with another piece of history.

Daniel once used a private retreat property in Connecticut for confidential negotiations.

Martin had attended a meeting there three years earlier.

The house belonged to a shell company connected to Northstar.

Owen checked it.

The shell company still owned the property.

Police in Connecticut were notified.

At six, officers found the house empty.

No Madison.

But the kitchen contained fresh food.

A bedroom had been used recently.

And in the garage sat a black SUV registered to Victor Lane's management company.

Victor was still in custody in New York.

The vehicle had been parked there before his arrest.

Inside the SUV, investigators found a packet of printed documents.

Forty-two pages.

The same number Madison printed overnight.

The first page was a sworn statement draft.

Madison described the affair.

The bedroom setup.

The archive impersonation.

The signature copies.

Northstar's leverage over Evan.

She also described a meeting she witnessed between Daniel and Thomas Keene in which Daniel said Claire needed to be "discredited before the auditors find Phoenix."

Claire stopped at the word.

"Phoenix again."

Owen turned to the final pages.

Madison had printed emails from Daniel's private server.

One thread was dated only three months earlier.

Daniel wrote to Victor Lane.

If C.B. starts asking about Harbor, move the Mercer files before she sees the medical report.

Claire stared at the phrase.

"What medical report?"

Owen searched the recovered storage inventory.

No medical report had been listed.

Martin said he knew nothing about it.

Robert knew nothing.

Elena's face tightened.

"Could it be about Charles's surgery?"

Claire looked at her.

Her father had died after surgical complications six years earlier.

The death had been devastating but medically explained.

At least Claire had always believed it was.

She felt suddenly cold.

"Daniel had access to my father's hospital logistics."

Elena held up a hand.

"Do not jump ahead of evidence."

Claire nodded, but her thoughts had already moved.

Owen continued through Madison's documents.

A final email thread contained no attachment.

Only a message from Victor to Daniel.

Medical report is still in the desk compartment behind the false back.

Claire looked up.

"We opened the locked compartment."

Owen understood first.

"Not the false back."

Police returned to Charles's rolltop desk in Westchester.

A forensic technician removed the rear panel of the compartment.

Behind it was a thin envelope.

Inside was a laboratory report dated five days before Charles Bennett's death.

The report was not about the surgery.

It was a toxicology screen ordered privately by Charles's physician.

The result showed an unusual sedative in Charles's blood before he entered the hospital.

At the bottom, Charles had written one sentence by hand.
