Chapter 2: The Dominoes Fall

Chapter 2: The Dominoes Fall

The collapse of the Collins family began precisely at 7:00 a.m. on December 26th.

I watched it unfold from the monitors in my executive office. First came the tow trucks. Martin had always bragged about his brand-new luxury SUV, bought and paid for by a "generous corporate stipend" from his mysterious employer. He never knew that stipend was personally approved by me.

Security cameras caught Martin sprinting out of his suburban mansion in his bathrobe, screaming at the repo men as they hauled the vehicle away.

Thirty minutes later, my phone buzzed with an automated alert. Claire’s brothers, who ran a mediocre contracting business kept afloat entirely by Whitaker Construction's charity bids, had just received their immediate termination notices. Breach of contract. Zero severance.

At 10:00 a.m., Claire tried to book a luxury spa weekend using the black card she believed was tied to her father’s wealth. It declined. When she called the bank in a furious panic, they informed her the account had been permanently closed by the primary account holder.

By noon, the Collins family was in a state of absolute hysteria. Believing there had been a massive administrative error, Martin rallied his sons and my soon-to-be ex-wife. They were marching straight to the headquarters of Whitaker Construction to demand an audience with the CEO.

They were coming to me.
