Six months later, the Ohio summer was in full swing.
I sat in the front row of the auditorium, holding a massive bouquet of flowers. Up on the stage, Sophie walked across the podium, grabbing her high school diploma with a beaming smile. She looked radiant, confident, and completely at peace.
We never heard directly from the Collins family again, though the local gossip mill filled in the blanks. Without my company artificially propping up their lifestyle, reality hit them hard. Martin’s house went into foreclosure, forcing him to take a minimum-wage retail job just to make ends meet. The brothers filed for bankruptcy.
As for Claire, she was living in a cramped studio apartment on the bad side of town, working double shifts at a diner. She tried to sue me, of course. But every judge in the state threw the case out the moment they saw the prenup she had drafted herself.
"Hey, Dad!" Sophie ran down the aisle, throwing her arms around my neck. "Did you see me?"
"I saw you, kiddo," I smiled, hugging her tight. "I couldn't be prouder."
"So, what's next?" she asked, pulling back with a grin. "College? Or do I start learning the ropes at Whitaker Construction?"

"How about a long vacation first?" I laughed, putting my arm around her shoulder as we walked out into the bright sunshine.
For eight years, they called me a broke handyman. But as I opened the door of my Bentley for my daughter, I knew the truth. I had built a multimillion-dollar empire, but walking away from the people who didn't value us? That was the best thing I ever built.
