Chapter 4: The Fine Print

The silence in the room was deafening. Claire’s brothers looked like they were going to be sick. Martin’s face turned a dangerous shade of purple.

"You..." Martin stammered. "You're the broke handyman."

"I was a man who wanted a family," I corrected him, my voice turning to ice. "I wanted to know that you loved me for who I was, not what I had. But you couldn't do that. You humiliated me for eight years. I took it, because I loved your daughter. But the second you laid a hand on my daughter? The second you threw Sophie into the freezing snow while you drank my champagne?"

I picked up the manila folder Claire had handed me on Christmas Eve and tossed it onto the center of the desk.

"You crossed the line."

Claire scrambled forward, tears streaming down her face. "Daniel, wait, please! I didn't know! If I had known—"

"If you had known I was worth sixteen million dollars, you would have treated my daughter like a human being?" I cut her off. "That makes it worse, Claire."

I tapped the signed divorce papers. "When you handed me these, you rushed a no-contest dissolution. You also demanded an ironclad prenup eight years ago because you were terrified I’d take half of your modest savings. You legally waived your right to any hidden assets. You leave with exactly what you brought into this marriage. Nothing."

"You can't do this to us!" Martin yelled, stepping forward.

Davis, my head of security, immediately stepped out of the shadows, placing a heavy hand on Martin's shoulder.

"I already did," I said. "You're fired, Martin. The brothers' contracts are void. You have exactly five minutes to leave my building before I have you arrested for trespassing."
