Chapter 3: The Corner Office

"Do you know who I am?!" Martin’s voice echoed through the marble-lined lobby of my building. "I am a senior regional manager! I demand to speak to Mr. Whitaker right now!"

My head of security, a towering man named Davis, just smiled politely. "Right this way, Mr. Collins. He’s expecting you."

I sat behind the massive mahogany desk in my top-floor office. The heavy oak doors swung open, and Martin stormed in, followed closely by Claire and her two brothers.

"Now listen here, Whitaker, I don't know what kind of glitch is happening in your accounting department, but—"

Martin froze. The words died in his throat.

I slowly spun my leather chair around, steeled my posture, and leaned forward, resting my elbows on the desk.

"Hello, Martin," I said quietly.

Claire let out a breathless gasp. Her eyes darted from my face to the sweeping skyline view, to the gold-plated nameplate on the desk that read: Daniel Whitaker, Founder & CEO.

"Daniel?" Claire whispered, her face draining of all color. "What... what are you doing in Mr. Whitaker's chair? Are you fixing something in here?"

"I'm not fixing anything, Claire," I said, leaning back. "I’m breaking things. Specifically, everything you and your family built on my dime."
