Chapter 13 - THE SECOND V

Victor Lang was Jonathan’s former business partner.

He had also been my husband’s closest friend.

After Jonathan died, Victor delivered the eulogy.

He sat beside me at the funeral.

He helped establish the charitable foundation bearing Jonathan’s name.

For six years, he had attended every annual memorial dinner.

When Detective Reynolds showed me his photograph, I wanted to reject the evidence.

I did not.

I had already learned how dangerous disbelief could become.

Victor’s messages to Victoria dated back eight years.

He had coordinated the shell companies.

He had moved money through overseas accounts.

He had provided medical information about Jonathan’s worsening heart condition.

One message changed everything.

HE WILL NOT SURVIVE ANOTHER EPISODE IF HIS MEDICATION IS DELAYED.

Jonathan died after collapsing in his office.

His emergency medication had not been in his briefcase.

We believed he had forgotten it.

Now we knew someone had removed it.

“Did Victor kill him?” Daniel asked.

Detective Reynolds chose her words carefully.

“We believe he created the conditions that prevented your brother-in-law from receiving treatment.”

The difference sounded legal rather than moral.

Jonathan might still be alive if Victor had not taken the medication.

My grief returned with a violence that left me unable to breathe.

For years, I had accepted Jonathan’s death as cruel chance.

Now it had a face.

Victor had comforted me afterward.

He had held my hand while knowing exactly what he had done.

Police went to his home.

He was gone.

His office had been cleared.

Unlike Adrian, Victor did not attempt to create a false trail.

He left a message for me inside the foundation’s conference room.

A single envelope sat in my chair.

Clara, your husband discovered that your father’s company was built using stolen land.

He planned to return the money.

You stopped him without even knowing it.

You protected the Bennett name because reputation has always mattered more to your family than truth.

Meet me at the abandoned Harbor Point development tomorrow at midnight.

Come alone if you want Jonathan’s final recording.

Daniel refused to let me go.

Detective Reynolds wanted to arrange surveillance.

Victor would expect both.

I agreed to cooperate with the police.

But I did not tell them everything.

The abandoned Harbor Point development included underground service tunnels.

Jonathan had shown them to me years earlier.

There was an entrance beneath the old train platform that did not appear on the official plans.

At eleven thirty the next night, I entered the tunnel alone.

At the far end, a light appeared.

Victor stood beneath it holding Jonathan’s phone.

“You finally stopped hiding behind your brother,” he said.

I looked at the man who had helped bury my husband.

“I came to hear his voice.”

May you like

Victor smiled.

“Then you should prepare to learn why he no longer trusted you.”
