Chapter 6 - THE ACCOUNT IN MY NAME

The account had been opened in Switzerland seven years earlier.

It contained twenty-seven million dollars.

My name appeared on every document.

My passport number had been used.

My signature appeared on the authorization forms.

But I had never opened it.

Detective Reynolds spread the records across the dining room table.

“Your husband transferred the funds eleven months before his death.”

“From where?”

“A development company owned by the Bennett Trust.”

Daniel sat beside me.

His face was hollow from the collapse of his engagement.

“What was the money supposed to finance?”

“A housing project,” I said.

“It was never built.”

I remembered Jonathan mentioning delays.

Environmental permits.

Contract disputes.

Then his health deteriorated, and the project disappeared beneath medical appointments and funeral arrangements.

Detective Reynolds pointed to a column of transfers.

“The money moved through six shell companies before reaching this account.”

“Charles established four of them.”

“And the other two?”

“Adrian Cross.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“Why use Clara’s name?”

“To make her responsible if the account was discovered.”

The answer came from the doorway.

Vanessa stood there with an officer beside her.

She had agreed to cooperate in exchange for consideration from the prosecutor.

Daniel’s entire body stiffened.

Vanessa looked at him but did not approach.

“Charles said Jonathan discovered the theft.”

“He was gathering evidence.”

“Then why was the final account in Clara’s name?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“Because Charles needed protection.”

“Protection from whom?”

“Your father.”

Daniel and I looked at each other.

Our father had died sixteen years earlier.

The account was opened nine years after his death.

“That makes no sense,” Daniel said.

Vanessa sat at the far end of the table.

“Charles believed your father had kept records.”

“Records of what?”

“An agreement.”

Detective Reynolds slid a photograph toward us.

It showed our father, Charles, and a third man standing outside a construction site.

The third man was Adrian Cross’s father.

On the back, someone had written three words.

THE ORIGINAL PARTNERS.

“My father built the Bennett company alone,” Daniel said.

“That is what everyone was told,” Vanessa replied.

She explained that Charles’s father and Adrian’s father had helped create the first Bennett development project.

They had used political connections, private loans, and land purchased through hidden companies.

When the business became successful, our father allegedly forced them out.

Charles had spent decades believing the Bennett fortune had been stolen from his family.

“This was revenge?” I asked.

“Revenge and money.”

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“Charles chose me because I had access to wealthy families.”

“He paid my debts.”

“He taught me what to say.”

“He created the chance meeting where Daniel and I met.”

Daniel’s eyes filled with disbelief.

“Our meeting at the museum?”

“Adrian arranged the invitation.”

“You dropped your purse.”

“I knew you would help me pick everything up.”

Daniel stood abruptly.

He walked out of the room.

Vanessa watched him leave.

For one moment, genuine regret crossed her face.

Then Detective Reynolds asked the most important question.

“What was supposed to happen after the wedding?”

Vanessa pressed her lips together.

“Daniel was supposed to sign the transfer.”

“And then?”

“Charles was going to make Clara’s hidden account public.”

“That would destroy her reputation.”

“It would also remove her as trustee.”

“Who would replace her?”

Vanessa looked toward the hallway where Daniel had disappeared.

“Her brother.”

May you like

The plan had never been only to steal Daniel’s money.

It was designed to turn him against me first.
