Chapter 17 - THE LAST LIE

Adrian did not resist when police entered the room.
He appeared almost relieved.
He placed the folder on the bed.
“Everything you need is inside.”
Detective Reynolds ordered him away from it.
He raised both hands.
“You still think I am the villain.”
“You stalked my family.”
“You helped steal millions.”
“You helped manipulate Daniel into a fraudulent marriage.”
Adrian looked at him.
“I warned Vanessa not to humiliate the staff.”
Daniel’s expression turned cold.
“That is your defense?”
“No.”
“It is proof that Victoria lost control of her.”
Adrian claimed he had joined Charles because his father died believing the Bennett family had robbed him.
For years, Adrian gathered evidence of our father’s misconduct.
Then revenge became more profitable than justice.
He built surveillance systems.
He forged documents.
He helped Charles move money.
But Jonathan discovered him.
“Jonathan offered me immunity if I testified,” Adrian said.
“Why didn’t you?”
“Because Victor threatened my daughter.”
None of us knew Adrian had a child.
He showed Detective Reynolds a photograph of a young girl.
Victor had used her safety to keep Adrian loyal.
“Where is she now?”
“Safe.”
“Then why continue after Victor was arrested?”
Adrian looked at me.
“Because I needed Clara to find this.”
The folder contained Jonathan’s medical records.
One page showed that Jonathan’s heart condition had been diagnosed two years earlier than he told me.
Another contained a signed statement.
Jonathan admitted he had secretly cooperated with federal investigators.
He had intended to expose Charles, Victor, and our father’s former associates.
The operation failed after his death.
“Why hide this for seven years?” I asked.
“Because Charles controlled the lead investigator.”
Adrian named a senior federal official.
The same official now supervising the Bennett investigation.
Detective Reynolds immediately contacted her department.
Within hours, the official was suspended.
Adrian surrendered all passwords to the remaining accounts.
He also confessed to stealing Jonathan’s watch and sending it to me.
“I needed you to stop protecting his memory long enough to search his past.”
“You could have come to me.”
“You were surrounded by people Charles owned.”
“So you terrorized us instead.”
He lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
Adrian was arrested.
His cooperation helped recover another forty-three million dollars.
It also led investigators to twelve officials and executives involved in the original land fraud.
Charles attempted to blame everything on Victoria.
Victoria blamed Victor.
Victor claimed Jonathan had been the mastermind.
The recordings proved otherwise.
Jonathan had made mistakes.
He had lied to me.
He had believed secrecy was protection.
But he had died trying to repair damage created before either of us understood it.
The truth did not restore my husband.
It gave me something grief had denied me for six years.
A complete goodbye.
At home, Daniel and I stood before Jonathan’s portrait.
“He would be proud of you,” I said.
Daniel shook his head.
“He would tell me I need a haircut.”
I laughed for the first time since the bucket of water struck me.
Then the doorbell rang.
A woman stood outside holding a baby.
She looked exhausted and frightened.
“My name is Natalie Cross,” she said.
“Adrian is my father.”
“He told me Daniel Bennett could protect my son.”
May you like
Daniel stared at the child.
Around the baby’s neck hung Vanessa’s engagement ring.
