Chapter 5 - THE FIRST CONFESSION

Charles took one step away from Vanessa.

It was small but unmistakable.

He was abandoning her.

Vanessa noticed.

Her face changed.

“You told me the recorder had stopped.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Who told you that?”

Vanessa realized what she had said.

Charles reached for his briefcase.

Marcus blocked the doorway.

“No one is leaving.”

Charles adjusted his cuffs.

“You have no authority to detain me.”

“That is correct,” I said.

“But the police do.”

Vanessa’s confidence cracked.

“You called the police?”

“I called a financial crimes investigator.”

“They are waiting outside.”

Daniel looked at me.

“When?”

“Before you entered.”

Vanessa grabbed his hand.

“Daniel, listen to me.”

“I never wanted to hurt you.”

“You planned to take twenty-seven million dollars.”

“It was Charles’s idea.”

Charles laughed bitterly.

“Do not be ridiculous.”

Vanessa pointed at him.

“He approached me.”

“He said the Bennett family had hidden money that should have belonged to his father.”

Charles’s face darkened.

“You greedy little fool.”

“You said Daniel would never notice.”

“You said Clara controlled him.”

Daniel pulled his hand away from Vanessa.

“What did he promise you?”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

This time they looked real.

“A new account.”

“Five million dollars.”

“And after the transfer?”

She said nothing.

Charles answered for her.

“She was supposed to disappear.”

Vanessa turned toward him in shock.

“You said Daniel and I would move to Europe.”

Charles smiled coldly.

“You truly believed that?”

Daniel looked sick.

Vanessa lunged toward Charles.

Marcus caught her before she reached him.

“You used me.”

Charles straightened his jacket.

“You were already using Daniel.”

“I merely gave your ambition direction.”

The police entered seconds later.

Detective Maya Reynolds carried a warrant authorizing the seizure of Charles’s briefcase and electronic devices.

Vanessa began speaking immediately.

She described meetings.

Secret accounts.

Forged forms.

Payments routed through Adrian Cross.

Charles remained silent.

As officers placed him in handcuffs, he looked at me.

“You think this began with Vanessa.”

“It did not.”

“What does that mean?”

He leaned closer.

“Ask your late husband why twenty-seven million dollars was missing before he died.”

My breath stopped.

Jonathan had been dead for six years.

His financial records had been audited twice.

There had been no missing money.

At least none that I knew about.

Charles was escorted outside.

Vanessa remained in the study.

She had not been arrested yet because she had offered to cooperate.

Daniel stood near the window with his back to her.

She approached him carefully.

“I can help fix this.”

He did not turn.

“Did you ever love me?”

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“I could have.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“That was not my question.”

She whispered the answer.

“I loved what my life became when I was with you.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

Then he removed the engagement ring from her finger.

Vanessa looked at the diamond in his palm.

Her expression held more grief for the ring than for the man.

As Detective Reynolds led her away for questioning, she paused beside me.

“Charles is lying about your husband.”

“How do you know?”

“Because Adrian told me Jonathan Bennett did not lose the money.”

“He hid it.”

“Where?”

May you like

Vanessa smiled faintly.

“In an account opened under your name.”
