Chapter 14 - Rachel Takes the MicrophoneThe press conference began at four.

Every major local financial reporter attended.

National networks joined remotely.

Daniel stood behind the curtain beside Rachel.

“You don't have to do this.”

Rachel looked at him.

“Yes.”

“I do.”

Karen adjusted the documents in her hands.

“Our goal is transparency.”

Rachel smiled.

“Your goal is to stop me from saying something legally disastrous.”

“That too.”

Pierce stood at the back.

Vanessa had agreed to speak with federal investigators.

Her cooperation was not public yet.

Rachel stepped toward the podium.

Camera shutters erupted.

She waited.

Then she began.

“My name is Rachel Morgan.”

“Today documents were released suggesting unauthorized funds were used during the early development of Morgan Development Group.”

“That statement is true.”

Reporters immediately began shouting.

Rachel raised her hand.

“The suggestion that Daniel Morgan stole those funds is not.”

The room quieted.

“The money belonged to me.”

She explained the investment account.

The forged authorizations.

Margaret's investigation.

She did not accuse anyone by name beyond what attorneys approved.

Then she revealed the founder shares.

“For nearly seven years, I have legally owned forty percent of Morgan Development Group.”

The room exploded.

Daniel almost smiled backstage.

Nobody outside a small circle had known.

Rachel continued.

“I did not understand the continuing legal status of those shares following my divorce.”

“Neither did Daniel.”

“Those questions are now being addressed.”

A reporter shouted,

“Are you accusing your ex-husband's new wife?”

Rachel remained calm.

“No.”

“I am saying investigators now have evidence regarding the unauthorized transfers.”

Another reporter asked,

“Why reveal this now?”

Rachel looked directly into the cameras.

“Because secrecy created this problem.”

“And I am finished allowing other people to use secrecy as a weapon.”

Daniel stepped beside her.

Reporters shouted again.

He spoke next.

“Morgan Development is cooperating fully.”

“All North Harbor negotiations are temporarily suspended.”

“My marriage to Vanessa Morgan is also ending.”

Another eruption.

Daniel continued.

“My priority is my daughter.”

“Then my employees.”

“Then resolving the financial misconduct that affected Rachel and this company.”

A reporter shouted,

“Do you still control Morgan Development?”

Daniel looked at Rachel.

“Together, Rachel and I control ninety-two percent.”

Rachel raised one eyebrow.

Daniel added quickly,

“Independently.”

A few reporters laughed.

So did Rachel.

The moment humanized them.

Within hours, public perception shifted.

Not completely.

But enough.

The story was no longer Billionaire Built Empire With Stolen Money.

Now it was Divorced Founders Unite Against Alleged Financial Scheme.

Helena hated it.

Pierce knew because she called Rachel that evening.

Rachel answered on speaker.

“You enjoy attention.”

Helena's voice was cold.

Rachel sat beside Daniel and Karen.

“You created the attention.”

“You humiliated yourself.”

“Did I?”

“You admitted your husband built his fortune using your money.”

“Ex-husband.”

Daniel whispered,

“Thank you.”

Rachel ignored him.

Helena continued.

“You think public sympathy protects you?”

“No.”

Rachel looked at Pierce.

“Evidence does.”

Silence.

Then Helena laughed.

“You don't have enough.”

Rachel replied,

“Vanessa disagrees.”

The silence changed.

Daniel leaned forward.

Helena's voice became very quiet.

“What did you say?”

Rachel smiled.

“Good night, Helena.”

She hung up.

Pierce nodded approvingly.

“That will make her move.”

Karen frowned.

“Is that good?”

“If we're watching.”

They were.

Federal investigators had already begun monitoring Evan's accounts.

Helena's communications were under subpoena.

Vanessa wore a recording device during a meeting scheduled for the following morning.

The trap was forming.

But Helena was faster than expected.

At midnight, Pierce called.

“Evan is running.”

Daniel sat up.

“Where?”

“Airport.”

“Helena?”

“Unknown.”

Rachel checked Ellie's room.

The child slept peacefully.

Thomas had insisted on staying with them.

Security remained outside.

Pierce continued.

“Vanessa's meeting is canceled.”

Rachel frowned.

“Why?”

“Helena texted her one sentence.”

“What?”

Pierce read it.

You chose the wrong family.

Daniel's face hardened.

Then the house alarm sounded.

Rachel jumped.

Security shouted outside.

A vehicle accelerated away from the curb.

Thomas ran downstairs.

“What happened?”

One guard entered carrying an envelope.

“Someone threw this over the gate.”

Rachel stared.

There was no name.

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Ellie.

Taken that afternoon outside preschool.

Rachel went cold.

On the back, someone had written:

You can guard a house.

You cannot guard every moment.

Daniel crumpled the edge of the photo.

Rachel took it from him.

“No.”

Daniel looked at her.

“No what?”

“We are not becoming afraid.”

“She photographed our daughter.”

“And that is exactly what she wants.”

Rachel's voice shook despite her words.

“She wants us panicking.”

“She wants us making mistakes.”

Daniel stared at the photograph.

“Then what do we do?”

May you like

Rachel looked at Pierce.

“We finish this.”
