Chapter 15 - The False SurrenderRachel called Helena the next morning.

“I'll sell.”
Helena was silent.
Then,
“What changed?”
“You photographed my daughter.”
Helena did not deny it.
Rachel continued.
“I want this over.”
“Thirty-one percent?”
“Yes.”
“Eighty million?”
“Ninety.”
Helena laughed.
“You negotiate even when frightened.”
“Especially when frightened.”
They scheduled the signing for two days later.
Helena demanded neutral territory.
A private conference suite at a downtown hotel.
Rachel agreed.
The sale was false.
Federal investigators would be nearby.
The documents contained tracing provisions.
Any payment would expose Helena's funding sources.
Pierce disliked one detail.
“She will know something is wrong.”
Rachel nodded.
“So we give her something real.”
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
Rachel looked at him.
“Your anger.”
“My anger?”
“We stage another disagreement.”
Daniel almost smiled.
“That should be easy.”
At noon, Rachel and Daniel deliberately argued outside Morgan Development headquarters.
Photographers captured everything.
Rachel shouted about control.
Daniel accused her of exploiting the crisis.
It was convincing because pieces of it were real.
Rachel truly hated how often Daniel assumed leadership.
Daniel truly feared Rachel might eventually dismantle the company he spent years building.
Their voices rose.
Then Rachel walked away.
News outlets posted the footage within minutes.
DIVORCED FOUNDERS' ALLIANCE ALREADY COLLAPSING.
Helena took the bait.
She texted Rachel.
Now you're thinking clearly.
Rachel replied.
Friday.
Nine a.m.
No games.
Helena responded.
Finally.
Meanwhile, Vanessa met federal prosecutors.
She surrendered her phones.
Bank records.
Contracts.
Messages.
She admitted copying North Harbor files.
Admitted receiving money.
Admitted entering her relationship with Daniel partly under Helena's direction.
The confession could send her to prison.
She knew that.
Daniel visited her once.
They met in an attorney's office.
Vanessa looked smaller than he remembered.
“I'm sorry.”
Daniel sat across from her.
“I know.”
“I don't expect forgiveness.”
“Good.”
She nodded.
“I deserve that.”
Daniel looked at his wedding ring.
He had removed it.
It sat inside his pocket.
“Did any of it become real?”
Vanessa cried.
“Yes.”
“That might be worse.”
“I know.”
Daniel stood.
Vanessa stopped him.
“Daniel.”
He turned.
“I never wanted anything to happen to Ellie.”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“You already did something to her.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I know.”
“That is the part you still don't understand.”
“You keep talking about what you didn't intend.”
“But my daughter remembers what happened.”
Vanessa wiped her face.
Daniel continued.
“She asked Rachel if she ruined my wedding.”
Vanessa broke.
Daniel looked away.
“I hope you eventually become someone who understands why that matters more than your intentions.”
Then he left.
Friday morning arrived.
Rachel dressed simply.
Dark suit.
No jewelry except Margaret's sapphire necklace.
Daniel noticed.
“You're wearing it.”
“Temporarily.”
“Ellie said you could.”
Rachel smiled.
“She is generous.”
They entered the hotel separately.
Helena arrived at eight fifty-two.
Two attorneys accompanied her.
Evan was absent.
Federal agents positioned themselves nearby.
Rachel sat across from Helena.
“Ninety million.”
Helena nodded.
“In exchange for thirty-one percent.”
“Yes.”
Documents were reviewed.
Funds were verified.
Rachel signed the first page.
Helena smiled.
“Margaret would hate this.”
Rachel looked at her.
“No.”
“She'd understand.”
Helena's smile faded.
Rachel signed the second page.
Then Helena's attorney received a message.
He whispered into her ear.
Helena's face changed.
“What happened?”
Rachel asked.
Helena stood.
“We're done.”
Rachel remained seated.
“We haven't completed the transfer.”
Helena grabbed her bag.
Pierce's voice sounded through Rachel's hidden earpiece.
Something spooked her.
Helena walked toward the door.
Two federal agents entered.
She stopped.
“Helena Vale?”
“Yes?”
“We need to speak with you.”
Her eyes moved toward Rachel.
Rachel said nothing.
One agent approached.
“You are not under arrest at this time.”
Helena smiled.
“Then move.”
She stepped past them.
Pierce whispered,
“Let her go.”
Rachel frowned.
Helena entered the elevator.
Rachel stood.
“Why are we letting her leave?”
Pierce entered.
“Because we found Evan.”
Daniel appeared behind him.
“Where?”
Pierce's expression was grim.
“He never reached the airport.”
Rachel stared.
“Then where is he?”
Pierce turned his tablet around.
Security footage showed Evan entering Helena's private office building the previous night.
He never came out.
Daniel frowned.
“You think Helena did something?”
Pierce shook his head.
“I think Evan was preparing to betray her.”
Rachel's phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
A message.
Rachel opened it.
Evan.
I have everything.
She stared.
Another message appeared.
Helena doesn't know I'm talking to you.
A third.
If you want the original files Margaret was searching for, come alone.
Rachel looked at Pierce.
The address appeared.
May you like
Daniel recognized it.
“That is North Harbor.”
