Chapter 6 - The Woman Behind VanessaThey met Samuel Pierce that afternoon.

He chose a quiet restaurant thirty miles outside the city.

Rachel left Ellie with Thomas.

Daniel arrived alone.

Neither trusted anyone else.

Pierce was in his late fifties with silver hair and the careful posture of a man who noticed exits before menus.

He placed a thick envelope on the table.

“Your mother paid me to investigate financial irregularities.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“Who introduced Vanessa into my life?”

Pierce studied him.

“Do you remember Helena Vale?”

Daniel frowned.

“Of course.”

Rachel did too.

Helena had been one of Morgan Development's earliest consultants.

She specialized in luxury hotel acquisitions.

She had worked beside Daniel during the worst months of his marriage.

Rachel had disliked her instantly.

Not because Helena was flirtatious.

She wasn't.

Helena was simply cold.

Always observing.

Always asking questions.

Daniel had eventually fired her after discovering she was negotiating privately with a competing development company.

“What does Helena have to do with Vanessa?”

Pierce opened the envelope.

Inside were photographs.

One showed Helena entering a restaurant with Vanessa.

The date was nearly two years before Daniel and Vanessa claimed to have met.

Another photograph showed Evan Collins joining them.

Rachel stared.

“They knew each other.”

Pierce nodded.

“For years.”

Daniel looked stunned.

“Vanessa told me she met Helena after we started dating.”

“She lied.”

Pierce slid another document across the table.

It was a company registration.

Vale Strategic Holdings.

Owner, Helena Vale.

Minority shareholder, Vanessa Clarke.

Daniel stared at the name.

“Clarke?”

Pierce nodded.

“Vanessa's legal surname before she began using her mother's surname socially.”

Daniel remembered Vanessa saying she changed it after college because Clarke reminded her of an absent father.

Pierce continued.

“Helena is Vanessa's half-sister.”

Daniel looked at Rachel.

Rachel's stomach dropped.

“Why hide that?”

“Because Helena had already been banned from doing business with Daniel.”

Pierce leaned back.

“Your mother believed Helena used Evan to redirect Rachel's funds into Morgan Development during its early crisis.”

Daniel frowned.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“It does if Helena wanted leverage.”

“What leverage?”

“Ownership.”

Rachel understood first.

“If the money could later be traced to fraudulent transfers, someone could claim Morgan Development was built with stolen assets.”

Pierce nodded.

“Exactly.”

Daniel's face hardened.

“They could threaten to expose it.”

“Or sue.”

“For what?”

Pierce handed him another file.

“Vanessa signed a private agreement with Helena eighteen months ago.”

Daniel read.

His jaw tightened.

If Vanessa married Daniel and remained married for at least twelve months, any shares or financial interests obtained through divorce would be transferred partially to Vale Strategic Holdings.

Rachel stared.

“She married you as part of a business deal.”

Daniel said nothing.

Pierce continued.

“Your mother uncovered part of the scheme, but she died before I finished tracing it.”

Rachel looked sharply at him.

“Do you think her death was connected?”

Pierce immediately shook his head.

“No evidence.”

That answer brought slight relief.

“Margaret was already seriously ill.”

Pierce tapped the documents.

“But her death stopped the investigation.”

Daniel looked out the window.

For years, he had told himself his first marriage failed naturally.

Then Vanessa arrived at precisely the right moment.

Beautiful.

Understanding.

Interested in his work.

She seemed to accept his divorce without judgment.

Now he wondered whether every conversation had been rehearsed.

Rachel watched his expression.

“You couldn't have known.”

Daniel laughed quietly.

“Apparently everyone thinks I couldn't have known anything.”

“That isn't what I said.”

“I let her hide my daughter.”

“You didn't let her.”

“I created the circumstances where she thought she could.”

Rachel did not answer.

Pierce interrupted.

“There is a bigger problem.”

Daniel looked at him.

“North Harbor.”

Daniel's expression changed.

“How do you know?”

“Helena has wanted that property for five years.”

Rachel understood.

“Vanessa wasn't waiting for a divorce.”

Pierce nodded.

“She was waiting for North Harbor.”

Daniel stared at the table.

North Harbor was not simply valuable.

It controlled several miles of waterfront redevelopment.

Whoever acquired it would dominate commercial development in the region for decades.

“Who is Helena working with now?”

Pierce hesitated.

“A group called Crescent Capital.”

Daniel swore softly.

Crescent was Morgan Development's fiercest competitor.

“If they have my bid ceiling, they'll beat us by the smallest possible margin.”

“Probably.”

Daniel stood.

“I have to stop the bid.”

Pierce raised a hand.

“Don't.”

Daniel stared.

“If you suddenly change strategy, Helena will know you've discovered the scheme.”

“So?”

“So right now, she thinks she's ahead.”

Pierce's eyes narrowed.

“That is your only advantage.”

Rachel leaned forward.

“What do you suggest?”

Pierce looked at her.

“Give them exactly what they expect.”

Daniel slowly sat down.

“You want me to let them steal the bid.”

“I want you to let them steal the wrong bid.”

For the first time all day, Daniel smiled.

It was not a happy smile.

Rachel recognized it.

It was the expression he used before making a dangerous business move.

“What do you need?”

Pierce replied.

“A false North Harbor file.”

Daniel nodded.

“And Vanessa?”

Pierce looked toward the door.

“You go home.”

Rachel frowned.

“He goes back to her?”

“If she believes Daniel knows, she'll disappear.”

Daniel's smile vanished.

Pierce continued.

“Act confused.”

“Act hurt.”

“Act like a man desperately trying to save his marriage.”

Daniel looked at Rachel.

She hated the idea.

But she understood it.

“What about Ellie?”

Daniel asked.

Rachel answered immediately.

“She stays with me.”

Pierce nodded.

“Good.”

Then he handed Daniel one final photograph.

It showed Vanessa entering Evan Collins's apartment three weeks earlier.

They were holding hands.

Daniel stared at it.

Rachel expected anger.

Instead she saw something more dangerous.

Nothing.

Daniel folded the photograph.

Put it inside his pocket.

May you like

And said quietly,

“When do we start?”
