Chapter 13 - WHAT SARAH REMEMBERED

Sarah’s recovery did not erase her responsibility.

She gave investigators complete access to her finances, messages, and memories.

For hours, she described Jason’s routines.

He never slept near windows.

He kept shoes beside every exit.

He changed vehicles every few months.

He memorized license plates.

He avoided photographs unless he controlled the camera.

Most importantly, he maintained emergency storage lockers under false names.

One locker contained cash.

Another contained documents.

A third was reserved for what he called “unfinished business.”

Sarah remembered driving past the storage facility once.

It stood near an old freight yard.

Federal agents searched every unit linked to Jason’s known identities.

Most were empty.

Inside one, they found clothes belonging to Paul Denton, a shovel, and a printed route leading toward the Canadian border.

Jason had prepared to kill his partner.

Paul’s cooperation increased immediately.

He revealed a final secret.

The master ledger contained more than victim names.

It listed every person Jason bribed.

One of them worked inside the sheriff’s department.

The same department that delayed the welfare check I requested.

The same department that recorded Emily’s absence but did not enter Sarah’s property.

Deputy Chief Harold Vance was arrested that evening.

He had accepted payments for four years.

He altered incident reports.

He warned Jason before welfare checks.

He arranged for evidence to disappear.

When I called Friday, Vance personally instructed officers to wait.

Those lost hours had nearly cost Emily her life.

Vance denied knowing children were involved.

The payment records proved otherwise.

One transfer had been labeled:

POOL ISSUE.

Ortiz allowed me to watch part of his interrogation through the observation glass.

Vance insisted Jason would never be captured.

“He doesn’t run,” Vance said.

“He circles.”

“What does that mean?” Ortiz asked.

“He returns to whatever he thinks belongs to him.”

Sarah heard those words and turned pale.

She asked to see Emily’s blue bird story.

I brought the book to her.

She flipped through the pages until she reached the final illustration.

Emily had drawn a large tree beside a house.

A tiny black mark appeared beneath one root.

Sarah pointed at it.

“That tree stood in our backyard before the pool was built.”

“The contractors removed it.”

“Jason asked about it constantly.”

“Why?”

“He believed the former owners buried something beneath it.”

Investigators compared old property records.

Before the swimming pool was installed, the backyard contained a storm shelter.

The shelter under the pool was larger than the chamber where Lucas had been found.

A second room existed beyond the collapsed wall.

Jason had never recovered everything hidden there.

By midnight, Ortiz understood why he had not fled.

The ledger he carried was only a copy.

The original evidence remained beneath Sarah’s pool.
