Chapter 5 - THE STORY THEY BUILT AROUND ME

Ortiz explained the plan piece by piece.
Jason had been constructing a false history for months.
He had sent threatening messages from an unregistered phone and made them appear to come from me.
He had planted photographs of Sarah’s house in my garage during a recent custody exchange.
Paul had prepared a sworn statement claiming I had threatened to take Emily permanently.
The welfare check I requested had become part of their trap.
If I entered the property alone and something happened to Sarah or Emily, every piece of manufactured evidence would point toward me.
Mrs. Harris’s unlocked gate had changed everything.
Her presence created a witness Jason had not expected.
My request for police assistance established a timeline he could not control.
Most importantly, Emily had survived long enough to speak.
Ortiz ordered officers to search my house, office, and vehicle before Jason could plant anything else.
I agreed.
By midnight, the police found a sealed envelope taped beneath my SUV.
Inside were Sarah’s earrings, a bloodstained kitchen towel, and a copy of my house key.
The blood belonged to Sarah.
I felt sick.
Someone had attached the envelope while my vehicle was parked outside the hospital.
Jason’s reach was wider than we understood.
Sarah regained consciousness shortly after one in the morning.
She asked to speak with me.
I entered her room with Ortiz present.
Sarah looked smaller beneath the hospital blankets.
Her voice shook.
“I should have believed Emily.”
I said nothing.
“I thought Jason was strict.”
“Then I thought he was angry.”
“Then I knew he was dangerous.”
“But by that point, he had emptied the accounts and taken my phone.”
“He showed me recordings of you.”
“What recordings?”
“He edited your voice.”
“He made it sound like you were planning to take Emily and disappear.”
I felt anger rising.
“You handed our daughter to him.”
Sarah closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
The word held no defense.
No excuse.
Only shame.
“I failed her.”
Ortiz asked when Sarah discovered Lucas.
“Three weeks ago.”
“I heard someone coughing through the pool drain.”
“Jason told me it was an animal.”
“Then Emily slipped a note beneath my bedroom door.”
“What did it say?” I asked.
Sarah began crying.
“There’s a boy under the water.”
She had tried to call police.
Jason caught her.
He tied her inside the closet and told Emily that her mother had left.
Then he placed Emily in the cage.
“Why didn’t he kill you?” Ortiz asked.
Sarah looked toward the dark window.
“Because Paul needed my signature one more time.”
“On what?”
“A life insurance policy.”
The hallway door opened.
An officer stepped inside.
“Detective, Paul Denton is gone.”
His office had been emptied.
His car had been abandoned near the airport.

On his desk, police found a photograph of my daughter.
A red circle had been drawn around her face.
