Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN FROM THE LAKE

Rebecca Vale arrived the following afternoon.
She had spent eleven years believing her son was dead.
Detective Ortiz brought her to the hospital only after doctors confirmed Lucas was stable enough for a brief meeting.
I watched from the hallway as Rebecca entered his room.
She stopped after two steps.
Lucas stared at her as though time had folded in half.
“Mom?”
Rebecca crossed the room and gathered him into her arms.
The sound she made was quieter than a scream and more painful than one.
Lucas had been nine when Jason took him.
He was nearly thirteen now.
For years, Jason had moved him between basements, storage units, and abandoned properties.
When he married Sarah, he discovered the unused shelter beneath the pool.
He told Lucas that Rebecca had stopped searching.
He told him she had created a new family.
Lucas survived by counting sounds.
School buses in the morning.
Garbage trucks on Thursdays.
Emily bouncing a ball near the pool.
One afternoon, she heard him whisper through an old ventilation pipe.
At first, she believed the house was haunted.
Then Lucas told her his name.
For almost two months, Emily secretly brought him crackers, water bottles, and library books.
Jason discovered the missing food.
He placed a hidden camera near the pool shed.
That was when the punishment began.
Rebecca sat with me in the family waiting room.
“I warned Sarah,” she said.
My head snapped toward her.
“When?”
“Seven months ago.”
“I mailed her copies of police reports and photographs.”
“She never answered.”
Sarah had told me nothing.
Rebecca looked exhausted rather than angry.
“Daniel changes names, but he never changes patterns.”
“He chooses someone who wants a fresh start.”
“He becomes useful.”
“Patient.”
“Protective.”
“Then he convinces her that everyone else is dangerous.”
I understood because I had watched it happen.
Sarah had slowly stopped speaking to friends.
She changed Emily’s school.
She canceled family dinners.
She told me Jason understood her in ways I never had.
He had not simply entered her life.
He had replaced it.
Ortiz joined us carrying a recovered envelope.
The letter Rebecca sent Sarah had been found unopened in Paul Denton’s office.
Paul had intercepted it before Sarah could see it.
Inside was a photograph of Jason’s left shoulder.
A black compass tattoo was visible near his collarbone.
Ortiz placed a second photograph beside it.
It showed the man who attacked Emily in the hospital.
The angle was poor, but part of the same tattoo appeared above his scrubs.
Jason had been inside the hospital.
May you like
He had stood less than ten feet from my daughter.
And he had escaped using an employee badge issued to a man who had died six months earlier.
