Chapter 8 - THE MAN BEHIND THE PAPERWORK
Paul Denton was arrested before dawn at a roadside motel ninety miles away.
He had not been trying to flee the country.
He had been hiding from Jason.
Police found a packed suitcase, three false passports, and almost two hundred thousand dollars in cash.
They also found a pistol beneath his pillow.
Paul asked for immunity before answering a single question.
Ortiz refused.
By evening, he began talking anyway.
Jason had approached him two years earlier with a profitable proposal.
Paul would identify recently divorced clients who owned homes, carried life insurance, and had children involved in custody disputes.
Jason would meet them socially.
Paul would manipulate legal filings, intercept warnings, and redirect assets.
At first, the scheme involved money.
Then one woman threatened to expose them.
She disappeared.
Paul claimed Jason acted alone.
Ortiz did not believe him.
Neither did I.
Sarah had not been chosen by chance.
Paul introduced her to Jason at a charity fundraiser held by his law firm.
He described Jason as a widowed contractor who had survived a difficult marriage.
Jason listened to Sarah talk about loneliness.
He remembered every detail.
Within six weeks, he knew her passwords.
Within three months, he had moved into our old house.
Within six months, he controlled every account.
Paul admitted preparing the insurance policy.
Sarah was worth two million dollars after an accidental death.
Emily was listed as the secondary insured person.
Jason intended to kill Sarah first.
Then he planned to make Emily’s death appear connected to my attempt to abduct her.
I asked Ortiz what that meant for me.
“You would have spent the rest of your life trying to prove you didn’t murder your family.”
Paul also revealed that Jason kept a master ledger.
It contained names, payments, false identities, and recordings of every accomplice.
Jason called it his insurance policy.
The ledger was not digital.
It was written by hand inside a black notebook.
The last time Paul saw it, Jason had placed it in a waterproof container near the pool equipment.
Fire investigators returned to the property.
They searched the burned pump room.
The container was gone.
Jason had risked entering a guarded, burning house to retrieve it.
That meant the ledger could destroy him.
It also meant he still needed one final item.
Ortiz showed Paul the memory card Emily had taken.
His face turned gray.
“That isn’t the master card.”
“What is it?” she asked.
“A copy.”
“Where is the original?”
Paul looked through the interview room glass toward me.
“The girl hid it somewhere Daniel can’t find.”
