Chapter 7: The Confession

"So you admit it," I pressed, keeping my voice loud and clear for the wire. "You and Margaret forged medical records to falsely commit me against my will to steal my child. And you hit me. Repeatedly. You abused a pregnant woman because she was 'defiant'."

Adrian’s face twisted into an ugly, desperate snarl. The mask finally slipped entirely. The charming billionaire was dead; the monster remained.

"Yes! Because you were a nobody!" he spat, standing up and looming over me, his fists clenching. "You were supposed to be grateful! I gave you a life of luxury, and you dared to question me? If I had known who your father was, I would have treated you differently. But you lied to me, Elena!"

"I never lied," I said softly. "I just didn't tell you my last name. You did the rest all by yourself."

He raised his hand, the exact same motion he had made in the mansion. Old habits died hard. Even knowing who I was, his instinct was to control through violence.

"I should kill you right here," he whispered viciously.

"That's enough," a voice barked.

The 'gardener' dropped his shears and drew a sleek black Glock. Suddenly, the conservatory was swarming. Agents stepped out from behind giant ferns and statues.

Adrian spun around, freezing as a dozen laser sights painted red dots across his chest.

"Adrian Cross," a federal agent declared, stepping forward with handcuffs. "You are under arrest for conspiracy, fraud, forgery, and domestic battery. Put your hands behind your back."

Adrian looked at me, sheer terror in his eyes. He finally understood. I hadn't come to negotiate. I had come to finish it.
