Chapter 9: The Birth

There were no forged documents. There were no manipulative mothers-in-law or abusive husbands. There was only the sterile, safe environment of the best private maternity ward in New York, surrounded by security and a medical team that answered only to my father.

The labor was long and exhausting, but I pushed through the pain with a fierce, burning determination. I was bringing my son into a world where he would never know the fear I had lived with. He would never have to cower under Adrian's shadow.

My father held my hand the entire time, whispering words of encouragement, proving to me what real strength and real family looked like.

With one final, earth-shattering push, the room filled with the most beautiful sound I had ever heard. The sharp, healthy cry of my newborn son.

The doctor placed him on my chest. He was warm, tiny, and perfect. Tears streamed down my face, not of fear, but of absolute, overwhelming joy.

"He's beautiful, Elena," my father whispered, kissing my forehead, tears shining in his own eyes. "What are you going to name him?"

I looked down at the tiny bundle. He didn't look like Adrian. He looked like a blank slate. A fresh start.

May you like

"Leo," I said softly. "Leo Whitmore."

He would bear my family's name. The name that meant protection, loyalty, and strength. The Cross legacy ended here.
