Chapter 1 - The Camera Was Already Running.

Claire Mercer heard Sophie say the words from across the dining room, and for one strange second, nobody moved.
"Someone's already on the way."
Daniel's hands loosened around Claire's wrists.
Martin Mercer stared at Sophie's phone as if the small black screen had suddenly become more dangerous than anything else in the room.
The cigarette remained between his fingers, a thin ribbon of smoke curling toward the bright pendant lights.
Claire stepped away from Daniel so quickly that the back of her knee hit the dining chair.
She caught herself against the table and placed one protective hand over her stomach.
The dark fabric of her sweater carried a tiny scorched mark where Martin had pressed the cigarette against it.
The pain was sharp, but the betrayal hurt more.
"Claire, listen to me," Daniel said.
She turned on him.
"Don't say my name."
Daniel looked as though she had slapped him.
Martin recovered first.
"Sophie, give me the phone."
Sophie backed toward the window.
"No."
It was the first time Claire had ever heard Daniel's younger sister refuse their father without adding an apology.
Martin took one step toward her.
Elaine Mercer immediately moved between them.
Her wine glass trembled in her hand.
"Martin, stop."
"Stay out of this."
"I should have stopped you before it started."
That sentence changed the room.
Claire looked at Elaine.
"Before it started?"
Elaine's face went pale.
Martin's expression hardened.
"She doesn't know what she's saying."
A knock thundered against the apartment door.
Then another.
"Police."
Sophie exhaled so hard that her shoulders dropped.
Daniel whispered something Claire could not hear.
Martin crushed the cigarette into a dinner plate, leaving a black streak across the white porcelain.
"Everyone stay calm," he said.
Claire almost laughed.
It was such a perfect Martin sentence.
He could turn cruelty into a meeting agenda and panic into a public-relations problem.
Daniel walked toward Claire with his palms open.
"I was trying to keep this from getting worse."
Claire stared at him.
"You held my arms behind my back."
"Dad was angry."
"So you helped him."
"I thought if I kept you still, he would calm down."
Claire felt something inside her go completely quiet.
For months, she had wondered why Daniel avoided certain questions about Mercer Development, why he closed his laptop whenever she entered the room, and why Martin had suddenly become obsessed with her upcoming maternity leave.
Now she understood that fear had been sitting inside her marriage long before tonight.
The door opened.
Two police officers entered with a paramedic team behind them.
Martin stepped forward immediately.
"There has been a misunderstanding."
Sophie lifted her phone higher.
"No, there hasn't."
One officer looked from Martin to Claire.
"Ma'am, are you injured?"
Claire opened her mouth, but Daniel answered first.
"It was an accident."
Every head turned toward him.
Claire's eyes filled, not with tears, but with disbelief.
Daniel seemed to realize what he had done only after the words were already in the room.
"I mean, it got out of hand."
"You just said it was an accident," Sophie said.
Martin gave Daniel a warning look.
Claire noticed it.
So did the officer.
The paramedic guided Claire toward a chair and asked permission to check her.
Claire nodded.
Her hands shook while she lifted the edge of her sweater just enough for the medic to inspect the affected area.
The injury appeared limited, but the medic recommended that she be evaluated at the hospital because of the pregnancy and the stress of the incident.
Martin folded his arms.
"This is becoming ridiculous."
The older officer turned to him.
"Sir, step away from her."
Martin's jaw tightened.
For once, someone had given him an instruction he could not simply ignore.
Sophie walked to Claire and held out her phone.
"I sent the video to you already."
Martin looked sharply at Sophie.
"You did what?"
"And to myself."
She swallowed.
"And to someone else."
Martin's face changed.
That final detail frightened him.
Claire saw it immediately.
"Who?" Claire whispered.
Sophie looked at Martin before answering.
"Someone he can't order around."
The younger officer began taking names.
Elaine sat down slowly, staring at the untouched turkey in the center of the table as if she had just awakened in a stranger's apartment.
Daniel tried to approach Claire again.
The officer stopped him with one hand.
"Give her space."
Claire looked at her husband across that small distance.
"Was this planned?"
Daniel's silence lasted two seconds too long.
That was all she needed.
The paramedics helped Claire toward the door.
As she passed the table, she saw her leather work bag beside Martin's chair.
She was certain she had left it near the kitchen island.
The zipper was open.
A blue folder inside was missing.
Claire stopped walking.
"Where's my folder?"
Martin did not answer.
Daniel looked down.
Elaine closed her eyes.
May you like
And Sophie whispered the sentence that followed Claire all the way to the hospital.
"That's what this was really about."
